Russell T Davies has teased his new series of Doctor Who, claiming that one episode of series 14 is "one of the greatest things" he's ever done.

The writer is returning to oversee the BBC sci-fi series for its 60th anniversary, as well as the next series – which will see Ncuti Gatwa take over the TARDIS as the next Doctor.

Of course, Davies has written some of the most iconic episodes of television in the last few decades (including Who, Queer as Folk and It's a Sin), though he reckons one upcoming episode may have topped them all.

Speaking on Michael Ball's Radio 2 show, Davies confirmed he had started work on the new Who, going on to say: "I sat here and I watched episode 4 last night and I think it's one of the greatest things I've ever made in my life, so I'm very, very happy with it.

"It's looking so good Michael, I love it."

Dylan Holmes Williams, who directed the episode, went on to tease on Twitter: "As the lucky man who got to direct this incredible script, I’ve got to say I’m very excited about what we created."

Davies's new tenure will kick off with David Tennant returning as the Doctor for the three anniversary specials this year, before regenerating into Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor.

As well as the new season, the writer recently teased the return of show spin-offs, much like Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures.

"I thought – with no criticism whatsoever towards the people who were running it at the time, because they were running it within the BBC's measures – it was time for the next stage for Doctor Who," Davies told GQ.

"I thought the streaming platforms are ready, the spin-offs are ready; I always believed in spin-offs when I was there. I did Torchwood as a spin-off, The Sarah Jane Adventures as a spin-off.

"Those spin-offs declined when I left, and I can see why. And I very much left after 2008, when the money became scarce. I think that's fair enough for the public service broadcaster that the money is spent on other things."

Doctor Who returns later in 2023 on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Meanwhile, in the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on HBO Max. Classic Doctor Who streams on BritBox in the UK.
