Running late filling taxes? Here's how to get an extension from the IRS

Monday, April 15, is the deadline for filing your taxes, and for people who will not be able to file their taxes on time, the IRS has a system in place to obtain an extension.

However, the IRS makes it clear that submitting an extension to file your taxes does not mean you don't have to pay your taxes.

"Although an extension grants extra time to file, it does not extend the obligation to pay taxes due on April 15, 2024," read a statement from the IRS. "To avoid penalties and late fees, taxpayers who owe should pay either their full tax bill or at least what they can afford to pay by the April 15 deadline."

I need an extension to fie my income taxes. How do I get one from the IRS?

According to the IRS, individual tax filers can use the IRS Free File to electronically request an automatic tax-filing extension. There are a few caveats, however.

With every tip, the IRS reminds filers of their duty to pay their taxes on time.

"Please be aware that an extension of time to file your return does not grant you any extension of time to pay your taxes," read a portion of the IRS' tax filing extension website. "You should estimate and pay any owed taxes by your regular deadline to help avoid possible penalties.

"You must file your extension request no later than the regular due date of your return."

You may also qualify for an automatic extension if you've lived in a federally declared disaster area; served in the military and were  stationed abroad or serving in a combat zone; or were a citizen or resident alien living outside the U.S.

The IRS also has a site dedicated to helping you select a company to file for an extension electronically. That site directs filers to partners such as FileYourtaxes.com, FreeTaxUSA, TaxAct and TaxSlayer.

Along with alerting filers about these tax extension options, the IRS also posted yet another reminder that filing for an extension does not absolve anyone from paying taxes.

"These companies partner with the IRS Free File program, so that you can e-file your tax filing extension for free," read a portion of the IRS' extension website. "Please be aware that filing an extension gives you time to e-file your federal tax return. If you have a balance due, the deadline to pay is still April 15, 2024."
