Runaway chimpanzee makes it back to Ukraine zoo — with help from a bike, video shows
Videos captured the escapades of a runaway chimpanzee in the city center of Kharkiv, Ukraine.
The chimp, named Chichi, escaped from the Kharkiv Zoo on Monday, Sept. 5, according to Ukraine’s national broadcaster, Suspilne.
During her adventure, Chichi wandered through the streets, city square, and park, videos shared on the Telegram messaging platform and collected by the outlet Суспільне Харків show.
A woman in a bright yellow jacket approached Chichi and the two sat down together, video shows. Later, the woman gave her jacket to the chimp and helped her put it on. Appearing grateful, the chimp hugged the woman.
Riding on a bike, Chichi then headed back to the zoo, footage shows.
The woman was likely a zoo employee, Suspilne reported.
The zoo director confirmed to Kharkiv Today that Chichi returned home.
Chichi was evacuated from another outdoor animal park on the front lines of Russia’s ongoing attacks on Ukraine, The Guardian reported. Over 100 animals reportedly died before the park could be evacuated.
Kharkiv still experiences daily shelling from Russian troops, The Guardian reported. Unlike in March, when the bombardment destroyed buildings in central Kharkiv, most of the recent attacks have focused on the northern and eastern areas of the city.
