Porta Fortuna registered an impressive success in the Albany Stakes to provide Frankie Dettori with his 80th Royal Ascot win. Having ridden Gregory and Courage Mon Ami to success, the retiring Italian notched up his third victory of the week when guiding the Donnacha O’Brien-trained youngster to a one-length triumph.

Dettori said: “It’s brilliant to get 80. I had that figure in my mind all week, 100 percent. I thought, ‘God, I’ve got to get three’. It is easier said than done, but now that I’ve done it ‘Yes!’ it is a big number!”

King Of Steel gained compensation for his Derby near miss when storming to an impressive victory in the King Edward VII Stakes, while a pre-dawn wake up call and a fumbled start could not prevent Shaquille from securing a landmark success for connections in the Commonwealth Cup.

Frankie Dettori: Racing’s great showman produces Royal Ascot fairytale

17:11 , Mike Jones

Royal Ascot is a stage unlike any other in horseracing. It’s a course that mixes royalty with fashion, sport, and theatre.

Yet, despite how the races unfurl this week, nothing will reach the heights of drama quite like the final performance of legendary jockey Frankie Dettori, who raced here for the last time in his career.

Atop Courage Mon Ami, Dettori bided his time at the back of a stacked field, across the two mile course, in the showpiece Gold Cup on Thursday. He spotted a gap open up to his left and kicked the John Gosden trained horse into the front line...

5pm - Coppice wins the Sandringham Stakes!

5pm - Coppice wins the Sandringham Stakes!

5pm - Sandringham Stakes

16:53 , Mike Jones

Oli Bell explains his pick for the Sandringham Stakes: “Sky Bet are paying eight places in the race so get involved in the extra places in the Sandringham. I do think Jackie Oh will be hard to beat as the favourite.

“One of the prices I quite like is Girl Racer for William Haggas and Tom Marquand, who obviously served up that incredible victory with Desert Hero for the royal family. It’s going to be another great day in store, the sun’s out, plenty of horses to cheer on today – hopefully some winners to be had for the punters.

“It’s been a pretty brutal start to the meeting, but fingers crossed either Jackie Oh or Girl Racer can win the Sandringham today.”

5pm - Sandringham Stakes

16:48 , Mike Jones

Up next is the Sandringham Stakes and there are few options to go for in this one.

Jackie Oh at 9/2 is Oli Bell’s pick with Alex Hammond electing to go with Marksman Queen at 17/2.

4.20pm - Tahiyra wins the Coronation Stakes!

16:24 , Mike Jones

Tahiyra comes round the outside to win by a length ahead of Remarquee who was squeezes out and had to respond. This may go to the stewards.

The length of victory should work in Tahiyra’s favour.

4.20pm - Coronation Stakes

16:22 , Mike Jones

Tahiyra is forced behind but most out wide as they turn into the straight. Meditate is still leading ahead of Sounds of Heaven.

4.20pm - Coronation Stakes

16:22 , Mike Jones

And they’re off! Six fillies set off in this round mile race.

Queen For You is on the rail with Mammas Girl heading forward on the outside. Meditate is at the front.

4.20pm - Coronation Stakes

16:16 , Mike Jones

Mammas Girl: Taking winner of the Nell Gwyn but a touch below-par in the 1000 Guineas. That race is working out well however, and not impossible she bounces back.

Meditate: 2nd to Tahiyra in the Irish 1000 Guineas and is fancied to reverse that form if the ground dries up enough. Course winner, top-class filly; major player.

Queen For You: Good 2nd in Listed at York latest. Has bundles of potential but this race might come too soon in her development; chance.

Remarquee: Poor run in the Guineas, having won the Fred Darling. Question mark still hangs over whether she truly stays a mile; perhaps best watched.

Sounds Of Heaven: Surprised a few when fending off Queen For You to win the Michael Seely at York. Tough, beautifully-bred filly who can step up once again; good chance.

Tahiyra: Top-class filly, dual Group 1 and Classic winner. Has the beating of most of these on her two Guineas efforts but perhaps something to prove on fast ground

“There’s no such thing as an easy Group 1 but Tahiyra is the best filly. I fancied her even with Mawj in so I’m all over her now the Godolphin runner is out.

“The only problem is she’s a worse price! She’s the one for me.”

Winning rider Oisin Murphy spoke to ITV saying: “The race is almost over with a start like that so I just got onto the back of the pack and hoped they’d gone a little too quick up front.

“To do it like he did, and beat the likes of Little Big Bear is an outstanding performance.”

Little Big Bear is the big favourite for this one. He’s beat a few of this field already and was a winner for Frankie Dettori at Haydock. This should be one of the easier races to pick but you can never say never in horseracing.

2:30pm - Albany Stakes

14:28 , Mike Jones

Carlas Way, Navassa Island and Porta Fortuna are the three favourites to take this first race at Royal Ascot on Friday.

Alex Hammond’s tip: “It’s the fourth day here at Royal Ascot and today’s offer comes in the first race – money back as cash if your second, third, or fourth in the Albany.

“For me, this is about one horse – Carla’s Way. She was a talking horse before she ran at Doncaster and did loads wrong on that day, she was too keen but still found at the end. The form has been franked in style and I’m hoping Carla’s Way wins the first here at Royal Ascot. Have a great day.”

King Charles and Queen Camilla ecstatic after getting their first Royal Ascot winner

King Charles III and Queen Camilla were in high spirits as they watched their first Royal Ascot winner triumph in the King George V states.

The royal couple were a picture of delight as their thoroughbred Desert Hero, an 18-1 longshot, crossed the line first in a photo-finish.

The late Queen, who was a passionate racehorse owner and Royal Ascot stalwart, would have been “proud and excited” for the couple, said Zara Tindall, the King’s niece, who joined him in the royal box.

As they watched the final moments of the race, run over a mile and four furlongs, the Queen waved her official programme in the air in excitement and Charles looked across at his wife in joy at the end.

Bigger, bolder, brighter: Royal Ascot attendees bring colour and vibrancy to big race day

14:20 , Mike Jones

Racegoers have descended on the first day of this year’s Royal Ascot after the grounds were hit by a deluge of rain this morning (Tuesday 20 June).

But the torrential rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of those attending, with many bringing their best outfits to the racecourse.

Fashion at Royal Ascot has always been a big deal, and this year is no different. Big, sculptural hats and bright, colourful fascinators are all the rage this year, with women seeming to compete against each other for who can wear the tallest headgear. When Ladies’ Day arrives on Friday (23 June), viewers will no doubt be treated to an even bigger spectacle.
