Royal Ascot LIVE: Results, winners and latest updates as Frankie Dettori denied final win

Frankie Dettori was unable to sign off in fairytale fashion on his final day at Royal Ascot. While his book of rides on Saturday looked a promising one in his mission to add to his 81 winners at the big meeting, Dettori’s best finish of the afternoon was a fourth place with Mums Tipple in the Wokingham Stakes.

Covey was well beaten as favourite in the Jersey Stakes and Free Wind was unable to land a blow in the Hardwicke. The 52-year-old had bounced back from a disappointing first day when he went winless to enjoy some spectacular successes this week, including the Gold Cup aboard Courage Mon Ami.

The racing great arrived for his final day at Royal Ascot in the grandest possible fashion as part of the royal procession. Dettori and his wife, Catherine, were in carriage four with Jamie Snowden and his wife, Lucy.

Khaadem caused an 80-1 upset in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, while Saint Lawrence returned to winning ways in the Wokingham Stakes to oblige on his first start for Archie Watson and provide Hollie Doyle with a third victory at this year’s meet.

Royal Ascot: 4:20pm - The Hardwicke Stakes

16:46 , Jamie Braidwood

Pyledriver once again showed his liking for Ascot when defying an absence of almost a year to win the Hardwicke Stakes.

The hugely popular six-year-old has been beset by niggling injuries since winning the King George V And Queen Elizabeth Stakes in July last year.

Winner of the King Edward VII Stakes at this meeting in 2020, he looked to have hampered his chance in the first half-mile by running extremely keenly.

PJ McDonald was riding his first Royal Ascot winner having replaced the injured Martin Dwyer, while trainers William Muir and Chris Grassick have worked wonders getting their stable star back to full fitness.

As if to advertise his superiority over his rivals, once he hit the front Pyledriver (7-2) wandered in front of Changingoftheguard and West Wind Blows but went on to cross the line a length and a quarter clear of the latter.

Royal Ascot: 3:40pm - The Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes

15:51 , Jamie Braidwood

Khaadem caused an 80-1 upset in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Winner of the Stewards’ Cup in 2019, he was fourth in the corresponding race in 2020 but had always come up short when previously tried in Group One company.

Trained by Charlie Hills, he was given a typically patient ride by Jamie Spencer, who was recording his second big-priced winner of the week after the 50-1 success of Witch Hunter.

Highfield Princess, second in the King’s Stand on Tuesday, was prominent throughout leading one group, while The Astrologist and Kinross led the group on the far side.

The William Haggas-trained Sacred hit the front over a furlong out and it looked like she was just going to do enough to hold on, but Spencer had bided his time exquisitely and produced Khaadem to perfection.

Sacred was second, while the gallant Highfield Princess hung on for third.

Frankie Dettori: Racing’s great showman produces Royal Ascot fairytale with Courage Mon Ami

14:20 , Jamie Braidwood

Royal Ascot is a stage unlike any other in horseracing. It’s a course that mixes royalty with fashion, sport, and theatre.

Yet, despite how the races unfurl this week, nothing will reach the heights of drama quite like the final performance of legendary jockey Frankie Dettori, who races here for the last time in his career.

Kate triumphant after Frankie Dettori’s win at Royal Ascot

The Princess of Wales appeared to celebrate a Royal Ascot winner when she clenched her fists in triumph at the end of her day at the races.

Kate, who had wowed racegoers with a striking red dress, celebrated and clapped from the royal box after the aptly named Sandringham Stakes was won by Coppice, ridden by popular jockey Frankie Dettori.

The King and Queen, who have taken on the late Queen’s stable of racehorses, notched up their first Royal Ascot winner on Thursday 22 June, but their horse Candle Of Hope, a 50-1 outsider, was beaten by Dettori despite having led for a period.

Porta Fortuna registered an impressive success in the Albany Stakes to provide Frankie Dettori with his 80th Royal Ascot win.

Having ridden Gregory and Courage Mon Ami to success, the retiring Italian notched up his third victory of the week when guiding the Donnacha O’Brien-trained youngster to a one-length triumph.

A winner of a Group Three at Naas over this six-furlong distance on her previous start, the daughter of Caravaggio put her experience to good use with a professional display in Berkshire.

Having cruised stylishly into contention passing the two-furlong marker, the well-backed 5-1 winner responded gamely to her rider’s urgings in the closing stages as Dettori pushed his mount out with vigour to hold off the Aidan O’Brien-trained Matrika, who finished second having been up with the pace throughout.

Dettori said: “It’s brilliant to get 80. I had that figure in my mind all week, 100 per cent.

“I thought, ‘God, I’ve got to get three.’ It is easier said than done, but now that I’ve done it ‘Yes!’ it is a big number!”

Frankie Dettori will arrive for his final day at Royal Ascot in the grandest possible fashion as part of the royal procession.

The 52-year-old has bounced back from a disappointing first day when he went winless and picked up a nine-day suspension - which he is appealing - to enjoy some spectacular successes, including the Gold Cup aboard Courage Mon Ami.

Dettori and his wife, Catherine, are in carriage four with Jamie Snowden and his wife, Lucy.

His book of rides on Saturday sees Covey as favourite for the Jersey Stakes, Free Wind a short price in the Hardwicke, Kinross fancied in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes and Knockbrex the market leader in the Golden Gates Handicap. He also rides Mums Tipple in the Wokingham.
