Roundup: Watkins Memorial tennis improves to 12-0

Watkins Memorial's unbeaten tennis team didn't lose a singles game Wednesday, moving to 12-0 with a 5-0 blanking of Thomas Worthington.

Liam Grennen, Michael Hare and Wyatt Meade all swept their matches 6-0, 6-0 for the Warriors. Graham Smith-Nathan Walter won 6-1, 6-2 in doubles, and Gavin Adelman-Will Stought prevailed 6-3, 7-6.

BASEBALL

Massie impressive

Chase Massie pitched a three-hitter Wednesday, striking out six and walking only one, as visiting Watkins Memorial blanked Newark Catholic 2-0 in a Licking County League crossover game.

Brayden Windnagel had two hits and Noah Ciotti delivered an RBI double for the Warriors (11-5, 8-2).

Kane Stephey had two hits and Owen Przymierski threw a five-hitter with eight strikeouts for the Green Wave (6-9, 4-6).

Valley wins again

Carter Sopher allowed just four hits through five innings Wednesday and Hayden Rodgers picked up the save, as visiting Licking Valley extended its winning streak to eight with a 4-2 LCL crossover win against Lakewood.

Evan Lichtenauer and Aiden Harrold doubled and singled for the Panthers (13-1, 7-1), Brody Rodgers had two singles and Gunner Bowman an RBI single.

Carson Anderson had two hits and knocked in both runs for the Lancers (11-5, 7-4) and losing pitcher William Marrero struck out seven, allowing nine hits.

Johnnies romp

Winning pitcher Zak Wagner threw four innings of one-hit relief and also had a two-run single Wednesday as host Johnstown beat Licking Heights 14-4 in six innings of a LCL crossover contest.

Jacob Myers had three hits and scored three runs for the Johnnies (4-9, 2-5), while Erik Marohl had two hits and Braeden Archibald a two-run single.

Maxim Fink doubled and singled, Joel Busker and Tino Martin each had two-run singles and Brady Pennington doubled for the Hornets (4-12, 2-7).

Vikings vanquished

Braden Yoder and Dain LeValley had the only hits for host Northridge on Wednesday in a 12-1, six-inning LCL crossover loss to Zanesville.

The Blue Devils improved to 4-10, 1-7 while the Vikings slipped to 1-17, 0-9.

Newark nipped

Pickerington Central's Jake Soha pitched a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts Wednesday, outdueling Cayden Vermilion, and the host Tigers pushed across two runs in the sixth inning for a 2-1 Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division win against Newark.

Austin Rose singled in a first-inning run for the Wildcats (9-7, 7-4), who managed only Bodie Smith's single the rest of the way. Vermilion allowed seven hits, fanned seven and walked two.

SOFTBALL

Watkins scores late

Locked in a 3-3 tie with host Newark Catholic, Watkins Memorial broke loose for five sixth-inning runs and pulled away to a 10-4 LCL crossover win Wednesday.

The Warriors (19-0, 11-0) hit four home runs. Jordyn Wycuff went 4 for 4 with a homer and three singles, Carlie Taggart and Cortney Dobbs homered and doubled and Maleya Thompson had a two-run blast. Kendal Tellings added a two-run double. Carsyn Cassady went the first 3.2 innings, striking out five and allowing one hit, and was relieved by Dobbs and Tellings.

Kami Diaz doubled and singled and Joanna Bailey also had two hits for the Green Wave (12-7, 7-4). Addi Gerber doubled and Avery Nagel had an RBI single.

Ernsberger stars

Ally Ernsberger pitched a four-hitter Wednesday, striking out 11 with four walks, and also hit a solo home run for visiting Granville in a 4-1 LCL crossover victory against Heath.

Megan Lodge smacked a homer and triple for the Blue Aces (19-2, 9-1), while Avary King and Emily Travis chipped in with two hits apiece, Maia Helling tripled and Alyssa Guglielmi doubled.

Kyndall Spicer had two hits for the Bulldogs (10-8, 5-5), while Savannah Lawson singled home a run. Shelby Moore struck out six and walked only one in the loss.

Valley tops Lancers

Visiting Licking Valley used a six-run fifth inning Wednesday to outscore Lakewood 9-8 in an LCL crossover game.

D'Neya Dennis had three singles and scored three runs for the Panthers (11-6, 6-3), while winning reliever Tori Baughman knocked in two runs with a pair of singles. Taylor Penick also had two hits, Addison Justice a two-run single and Abbe McNabb an RBI double.

Lauren Griffith clubbed a double and two singles, plating five runs for the Lancers (9-5, 5-4). Dani Stewart homered and singled, Becca Streets and Cora Redman doubled and singled, and Riley Williams and Jaycie Montie contributed two singles apiece.

Hornets rally

Visiting Licking Heights rallied for six runs in the seventh inning Wednesday, stunning Johnstown 6-3 in LCL crossover play.

Serenity Gutridge hit a solo home run, Savanna Christ tripled and Lily Meidl doubled and singled for the Hornets (7-8, 4-6). Evie Hays added two singles and Chesney McPeck was winning pitcher.

Addy Zak clouted a homer, double and single with two RBIs for the Johnnies (4-13, 1-8) and Emily Yanczura added a double and single.

Vikings cruise

Host Northridge scored 18 runs in its first two at bats Wednesday and went on to crush Zanesville 24-2 in a five-inning LCL crossover victory.

Kenzie Hannahs smashed a homer and three singles with four RBIs for the Vikings (4-11, 2-8). Kaitlin Angus drilled a double and three singles, scoring three runs with two RBIs, while Ellie Reese rapped three singles with three RBIs and Kadence Adkins drove home four runs with a double and three singles. Winning pitcher Josie Van Fossen clubbed a double and three singles and scored three runs.

The Blue Devils fell to 0-15, 0-9.

Wildcats explode

Mallory Back ripped a double and two singles with two RBIs Wednesday, and Lexi Shanaberg homered and doubled, also knocking in two runs as host Newark overpowered Groveport 15-4 in the OCC-Buckeye Division.

Paige Simons tripled and singled, driving home four runs for the Wildcats (8-9, 5-4), while Amora Spring yielded just four hits over five innings and singled twice. Calyn Music and Lauren Queen also had two hits and Audrey Lennon delivered a two-run single.

The Cruisers dropped to 1-12, 0-9.

Utica blanked

Host Utica (7-9) managed only singles by Kiersten Hull and Lauren Schmitt in a 12-0 non-league loss Wednesday to Danville.
