Roundup: Newark Catholic softball trailing in suspended tournament game

The Newark Catholic softball team will return to Danville on Friday in hopes of rallying to extend its season.

The No. 2 Green Wave trailed the No. 1 Blue Devils 5-0 in the fourth inning of their Division IV second-round game Thursday when persistent rain forced the suspension of play.

Kami Diaz, Maris Knowlton and Jahni Whitney each have singled for NC. Three errors have allowed Danville to score three unearned runs.

Heights falls on road

No. 21 Big Walnut erupted for five runs in the third and six in the fourth, sending visiting No. 24 Licking Heights to a 14-4 defeat in a Division I second-round game.

Ava Von Bargen doubled and singled and scored two runs to lead the Hornets (14-11). Kelsey Carter added a hit and two RBIs, Lily Meidl a double and an RBI and Lydia Rauch a hit and a run.

BASEBALL

Valley wins at home

Brandt Lichtenauer doubled twice as a part of a 3 for 3 performance, scoring twice and driving in two for Licking Valley in a 7-1 victory against visiting John Glenn in a game shortened to six innings because of rain.

Trent Clark added three hits, Hayden Rodgers two hits and an RBI, Adam West a hit, two runs and an RBI and Zane Hancock a hit, a run and two RBIs for the Panthers (19-4). Carter Sopher struck out three and scattered five hits.

Granville nipped

A two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning gave Lancaster a 2-1 victory against visiting Granville in a game stopped by rain.

Wilson Wells struck out six and allowed two hits and two runs for the Blue Aces (13-10). Cooper Silverman, Gavin Vradenburg and Chase Holtzapple each singled, and Jakob Culver scored a run.

Newark pair take third

Two Newark athletes placed third during the first day of the Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division championships at Lancaster.

Emma Ray cleared 9-feet-6 in the girls pole vault. Payton Taylor leaped 20-9 in the boys long jump.
