Roundup: Newark Catholic baseball rallies at Granville

Mikey Hess’ two-run single capped a five-run seventh inning Wednesday for the Newark Catholic baseball team, surging past host Granville for a 10-6 victory in Licking County League play.

Hess and Troy Johnston recorded three hits, a run and three RBIs apiece out of the top two spots in the order, igniting the Green Wave (8-11, 6-8), who overcame a 6-2 deficit after five innings, and Owen Przymierski added two hits and two runs and Rocco Capretta a hit, a run and an RBI. Hess also allowed one run in 2 2/3 innings of relief.

Jakob Culver totaled three hits, two runs and two RBIs for the Blue Aces (10-9, 6-6), and Cooper Silverman added two hits and a run and Wilson Wells a solo home run.

Heath edges Watkins

Hayden Woodward’s three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning boosted Heath to a 5-4 victory at Watkins Memorial to clinch an outright Licking County League-Cardinal Division title.

Connor Corbett totaled three hits, including a double, and two runs for the Bulldogs (18-2, 12-1), who rallied from an early 4-0 deficit. Jaiden Dansby struck out four in four two-hit scoreless innings of relief, and Riley Baum threw a hitless seventh inning to earn the save.

Cole Massie totaled three hits, including two doubles, and two runs for the Warriors (12-7, 8-4), and Chase Massie added two hits and a run and Brayden Windnagel a two-run single. Braiden Bates struck out three in five four-hit innings.

Newark wins at Groveport

Austin Rose was a perfect 4 for 4 with a run and three RBIs, powering Newark to a 13-3 victory at Groveport (1-17, 1-13) in Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division play.

Bodie Smith added a hit, three runs and three RBIs and Moses Crane and Dakota Foltz two hits, two runs and two RBIs apiece for the Wildcats (13-7, 10-4). Thomas Olon struck out 12 against just one walk.

Lakewood wins on road

William Marrero notched three hits, including two doubles, two runs and four RBIs in Lakewood’s 17-11 victory at Fredericktown.

Peyton Tichenor and Carson Anderson added three hits, a run and three RBIs apiece, Colton Ferry two hits and four runs and Nate Gall two doubles and two runs for the Lancers (14-6). Mason Sprankle and Luke Pierce threw two scoreless innings apiece.

Heights beats Northridge

Joel Busker and Kaleb Ribbing each homered and hit two doubles, combining for 12 RBIs in Licking Heights’ 18-1 victory against visiting Northridge in LCL play.

Richard Hill added three hits and two runs and Carson Johnson two hits, two runs and two RBIs for the Hornets (6-14, 4-8). Chris Harvey struck out four in four two-hit innings.

Braden Yoder, David Carr and Dain LeValley each singled for the Vikings (1-21, 0-13).

Johnstown falls

Erik Marohl had the lone hit for Johnstown (6-12, 4-8) in a 10-0 loss at Zanesville (5-13, 2-10) in LCL play.

SOFTBALL

Valley beats Utica

Liz Korns, Chloe Cooperider and D’Neya Dennis each hit an RBI single in a three-run bottom of the sixth inning, lifting Licking Valley to a 5-2 victory against visiting Utica in LCL play.

Addison Justice finished 3 for 3 with a double, a run and an RBI for the Panthers (14-8, 8-5), and Korns added two hits, a run and two RBIs and Tori Baughman two hits and a run. Abbe McNabb struck out three and scattered seven hits.

Kaitlin Evans hit a two-run home run for Utica (8-11, 6-8). Hannah Shaver added two hits.

Heights wins

Evie Hays homered and matched Alissa West with five RBIs for Licking Heights in a 26-3 victory against visiting Northridge in LCL play.

Savanna Christ recorded four hits, two runs and four RBIs, West three hits and four runs and Chesney McPeck two hits, four runs and three RBIs for the Hornets (14-10, 7-6). McPeck also struck out four and allowed one earned run in three innings.

Ellie Reese, Gracie Smith and Kaitlyn Angus each had a hit and a run for the Vikings (4-17, 2-12).

Watkins blanks Heath

Ali Langwasser was 3 for 3 and scored two runs out of the leadoff spot for Watkins Memorial in a 7-0 victory against visiting Heath as the Warriors (23-0, 13-0) wrapped up an outright LCL-Buckeye title.

Jordyn Wycuff added a triple and double, a run and an RBI, Kendal Tellings a three-run double and Kylie Trouten a hit and a run for the Warriors. Carsyn Cassady struck out 15 and allowed two hits in 5 2/3 innings, and Tellings struck out a pair.

Kyndall Spicer had two hits for the Bulldogs (12-10, 7-7), and Sydney Cottrell and Karli Staley each singled.

Granville outscores NC

Megan Lodge homered and doubled twice, racking up four RBIs, fueling Granville in an 11-9 victory against visiting Newark Catholic in LCL play.

Emily Travis added four hits, including two doubles, two runs and two RBIs, Avary King three hits and three RBIs and Hanah Rogovin three hits, three runs and an RBI for the Blue Aces (21-3, 11-2).

Kylie Gibson hit a three-run home run as a part of a three-hit performance, and Mary Snider also homered for the Green Wave (15-8, 9-5), who still can earn at least a share of the LCL-Cardinal Division title with a win at Johnstown on Friday. Addison Gerber added two doubles and two runs and Avery Nagel two hits and a run.

Johnstown wins

Addy Zak and Riley Stefanick combined to pile up six hits, five runs and nine RBIs for Johnstown in a 24-2 victory at Zanesville (0-19, 0-13) in LCL play.

Jenna Hochanadel, Emily Yanczura and Peyton Mischel each drove in three runs for the Johnnies (6-18, 3-10). Mischel also struck out four in three innings.

BOYS TENNIS

Newark wins

Newark swept the singles matches in a 4-1 victory against visiting Canal Winchester.

Will Woughter, 6-0, 6-2, Evan Devries, 7-5, 6-4, and Layton Shaner, 6-4, 6-3, won singles matches for the Wildcats (7-4). Trever Anderson and Noah Devries, 7-5, 6-2, won at No. 1 doubles.

TRACK

Gordon wins twice

Cadiera Gordon was a double winner, taking the 100 (13.03) and 200 (26.91) for the Newark girls during a meet against Reynoldsburg and host Big Walnut.

Also winning individually for the Wildcats were Aubree Murphy in the 100 hurdles (17.29), Meredith Pyle in the 1,600 (5:32.49) and Emma Ray in the pole vault (8-feet-6).

Winning individually for the Newark boys were Roy Price in the 110 hurdles (16.68), Sean Brechbill in the 800 (2:06.02), Ayden Bidwell in the discus (144-8) and Uriah Roberts in the pole vault (10-0).
