Roundup: Newark baseball surges past Worthington Kilbourne

Blane Sturm’s two-run single highlighted a three-run sixth inning for the Newark baseball team Saturday in a 9-6 victory at Worthington Kilbourne.

Sturm totaled three hits and three RBIs, and Moses Crane added three hits, a run and an RBI, Aidan Hamilton two hits and three RBIs and Seth Fish and Austin Rose two hits and two runs for the Wildcats (11-7). Evan Humphrey struck out six and allowed two hits and three earned runs in three innings.

Johnstown beats Northridge

Braeden Archibald had two hits, a run and two RBIs for Johnstown in a 13-1 victory at Northridge in Licking County League-Cardinal Division play.

Sam Marasek added a hit, two runs and an RBI, Jacob Myers a double, two runs and an RBI and Nash Andrix a triple, a run and an RBI for the Johnnies (6-10, 4-6). Myers also struck out five in three one-hit innings, and Jack Herman struck out three in four innings.

Riley Reeves struck out three and allowed three earned runs in five innings, and Reeves also had a hit and an RBI for the Vikings (1-19, 0-11). Noah Mason reached base three times, and Kam Lowery scored a run.

GCA wins in seventh

Bentley Johnson singled and later scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the seventh inning, lifting Granville Christian to a 6-5 victory against visiting Shekinah Christian in Mid-Ohio Christian Athletic League play.

Johnson recorded three hits, three runs and an RBI, and Andrew Benvie and Aidan Rhoads added two hits and a run apiece, Jake Fabbro a triple and a run and Gabe White a hit and two RBIs for the Lions (8-3, 6-1), who maintained their one-game lead in the MOCAL. Johnson struck out eight in five innings.

Heath blanks Academy

Preston DeVito fired a six-inning no-hitter, striking out five for Heath in a 10-0 victory against visiting Columbus Academy.

Kaden Green had two hits, a run and two RBIs, and Connor Corbett added three hits and two runs, Tannar Patterson a triple, three runs and an RBI and Hayden Woodward a double, a run and two RBIs for the Bulldogs (15-2).

Liberty splits

Run-scoring hits for Caleb Windle and Dawson Kamppi in the bottom of the eighth inning gave Liberty Christian an 11-10 victory against visiting Genoa Christian.

Kamppi racked up three hits, a run and an RBI, and Windle added two hits, two runs and two RBIs, Luke Mollohan two hits, including a double, and two runs and Aiden Geiger a hit, two runs and two RBIs for the Eagles (5-8), who scored three runs in the seventh to force the extra inning. James Rainier struck out nine with just one walk and allowed two earned runs in 6 2/3 innings of relief.

Evan Dupler struck out 11 in a five-hitter in a later 4-1 loss to visiting Millersport. Kamppi had three hits and three RBIs.

Granville falls at home

Jakob Culver tripled and singled, scored a run and drove in two for Granville in a 13-5 loss to visiting Highland.

Jake Johnson and Gavin Vradenburg added a hit and a run apiece, and Cooper Silverman doubled and drove in two runs for the Blue Aces (8-8).

Lakewood drops home game

Garrett Hardway doubled and scored for Lakewood in a 12-2 loss to visiting Jonathan Alder.

Mason Sprankle singled and scored for the Lancers (12-5).

Heights drops road game

Kaleb Ribbing’s two hits, including a double, and an RBI led Licking Heights (5-13) in a 10-1 loss at Mount Vernon.

SOFTBALL

Heights wins two

Licking Heights beat Thomas Worthington 14-7 and Bexley 16-4.

Ava Von Bargen, Alissa West and Savanna Christ each homered against the Cardinals, combining for five runs and eight RBIs. Lydia Rauch and Chesney McPeck added two hits and two runs apiece for the Hornets (12-10).

Von Bargen doubled three times and racked up five RBIs in a 4-for-4 performance against the Lions, and West tripled twice, scored four runs and drove in three, Christ added a home run and Cassidy Kasiara two hits, three runs and an RBI. McPeck struck out six and allowed two earned runs.

Newark falls on road

A three-run bottom of the sixth inning for Liberty Union sent visiting Newark to a 6-3 defeat.

Paige Simons and Lexi Shanaberg each doubled and scored a run, and Mallory Back added two hits, Audrey Lennon a hit and a run and Lauren Queen a hit and an RBI for the Wildcats (8-11). Carissa Shilts struck out five and allowed no earned runs in 2⅓ innings of relief.

Northridge falls twice

Northridge lost 14-4 and 24-7 to visiting Crooksville.

Addison Moore homered, and Kaitlyn Angus doubled and singled and drove in a run in the first game. Kenzie Hannahs homered, scored three runs and drove in four, and Karisa Miller added two hits, a run and an RBI and Josie Van Fossen a hit and a run in the second game for the Vikings (4-15).

Johnstown drops pair

Johnstown fell 5-1 to Bishop Watterson and 7-2 at Olentangy Berlin.

Addy Zak had two hits, Emma McGeehan a hit off the bench and Peyton Mischel a run in the first game. Aubrey Del Cecato and Riley Stefanick each doubled and singled in the second game, and Emily Yanczura added a hit and a run for the Johnnies (5-16).

BOYS LACROSSE

Newark rolls

Jack O’Reilly scored the first three goals of his career during Newark’s 16-1 victory at Lima Senior.

Doug Simpson and Dylan Reed also scored for the first time, and Drayson Peterson added three goals and a team-best four assists, Max Frost three goals, Hunter Berona and Luke Samples two goals apiece and Austin Reed a goal for the Wildcats (6-6). Matt Johnson made seven saves and Landon Sifford three.

BOYS TENNIS

Newark wins

Will Woughter (4-6, 6-1, 7-6) at No. 1 and Layton Shaner (5-7, 6-0, 6-0) at No. 3 each rallied for singles wins for Newark in a 4-1 victory against visiting Reynoldsburg to wrap up Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division play.

Evan Devries (6-0, 6-1) at No. 2 singles and Trever Anderson and Noah Devries (6-4, 6-3) at No. 1 doubles also won for the Wildcats (6-3, 3-2).

TRACK

Ingle, Bell win for Granville

Greyson Ingle in the pole vault (13 feet) and Corbin Bell in the 400 (51.68) won titles for the Granville boys during Thomas Worthington’s Gary Smith Invitational.

Adding third-place finishes were Dylan Layne in the discus (139-3) and Andrew Klaus in the 100 (11.00).

In the girls meet, Granville’s Kara Bergeron won the 1,600 (5:08.94). Nina Brechler took runner-up in the pole vault (10-6), and Bergeron, Charlotte Turner, Avery Ogg and Caitriona Sproul placed third in the 1,600 relay (4:09.45).

McKinney leads Utica

Hunter McKinney took a runner-up finish in the long jump (18-10) and also joined Lane Walters, Carson Meek and Andrew Bebout on the runner-up 800 relay (1:35.23) for the Utica boys Friday during the Fredericktown Invitational.

McKinney, Bebout, Hayden Quinif and Gavin Rutter added a third in the 1,600 relay (3:40.38).

In the girls meet, Newark Catholic’s Erin Keck took runner-up in the discus (109-3), and Utica’s Katie Reed took third (109-0). NC’s Leah Caudill and Utica’s Maddy Scarberry (4-8) tied for third in the high jump.

McCrady, Savage win

Audrey McCrady in the 800 (2:22.49) and Reece Savage in the 1,600 (5:16.08) won individual events Friday for the Johnstown girls during the Marion Night Invitational.

Savage added a runner-up finish in the 3,200 (11:22.55), and Savage, McCrady, Allison Bonito and Maren Boston placed third in the 3,200 relay (10:00.68) for the Johnnies. In the boys meet, Cameron Beverick, Brenden Ball, Aidan Howard and Collin Willard also placed third in the 3,200 relay (8:26.18).
