Roundup: Johnstown softball opens OHSAA tournament play with win

Ava Peterman struck out two and scattered six hits in five innings Monday, pitching the Johnstown softball team to a 12-2 victory against visiting No. 19 Worthington Christian in a Division III first-round game.

Aubrey Del Cecato totaled two hits, including a triple, three runs and an RBI out of the leadoff spot for the No. 14 Johnnies (7-20), who visit No. 4 Fredericktown on Wednesday. Addy Zak and Brooklyne Siegel each doubled, combining for three hits, two runs and four RBIs, and Riley Stefanick added a hit and three runs and Madison Holbrook a hit and two runs.

Lakewood advances

Dani Stewart struck out six in three two-hit innings before Becca Streets retired all six batters she faced in relief, leading Lakewood to an 11-1 victory against No. 16 Bexley in a Division II first-round game.

Cora Redman notched three hits, including a double, a run and three RBIs for the No. 7 Lancers (12-9), who visit No. 3 River Valley on Wednesday. Streets and Carly Williams added two hits and two runs apiece and Stewart and Riley Williams two hits, a run and an RBI apiece.

Granville wins

Sophia Patena homered and drove in four runs for Granville in a 22-0 victory against visiting No. 21 Linden-McKinley in a Division II first-round game.

Taylor Warehime added three doubles and two runs, Ainsley Johnson two hits and three RBIs and Sydney Cottrill a hit, a run and three RBIs for the No. 1 Blue Aces (24-3), who host No. 20 Beechcroft at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Ally Ernsberger and Megan Lodge combined for 13 strikeouts in a five-inning no-hitter.

Heath wins on road

Kyndall Spicer racked up four hits, including two doubles, two runs and an RBI, sparking Heath in a 10-6 victory in eight innings at Olentangy Liberty.

Kristal Keeran added three hits, a run and an RBI, Shelby Moore three hits and two RBIs and Kylie Green a double, two runs and an RBI for the Bulldogs (14-10). Karli Staley struck out nine and allowed two runs in five innings of relief.

Northridge drops road game

Ellie Reese had two hits for Northridge in a 10-0 loss at No. 8 Northmor in a Division III first-round game.

Camryn Moore added a double for the No. 18 Vikings (4-19).

BASEBALL

Heights wins at Utica

Joel Busker tripled and singled, scored twice and drove in three, fueling Licking Heights in a 10-4 victory at Utica in Licking County League play.

Carson Johnson added two hits, a run and two RBIs, Brady Pennington two hits and two runs, Grady Stephens a double, two runs and an RBI and Caleb Starns two hits and a run for the Hornets (7-14, 5-8). Chris Harvey struck out two and allowed one hit and no earned runs in three innings of relief.

Roman Gamble doubled, scored a run and drove in one for Utica (11-11, 9-6). Connor Whisner added two hits, Isaak Wogan a hit and a run and Jarrett Hill a hit and an RBI.

Granville wins at Northridge

Jacob Smith hit two doubles as a part of a 3 for 3 performance and scored three runs for Granville in an 18-6 victory at Northridge in LCL play.

Gavin Vradenburg added three hits, two runs and three RBIs, Wilson Wells three hits, two runs and an RBI and Cooper Silverman three hits, a run and three RBIs for the Blue Aces (12-9, 8-6), who overcame an early 4-1 deficit. Chase Holtzapple struck out three and allowed two earned runs in five innings.

Dain LeValley led the Vikings (1-23, 0-15) with two hits, a run and an RBI. Noah Mason added a hit, two runs and two RBIs and Andrew Shay a hit and a run.

Lakewood wins at home

Nate Gall hit a three-run home run and added an RBI double, powering Lakewood in a 10-2 victory against visiting Zanesville (6-16, 2-12) in LCL play.

Jalen White, Colton Ferry and Carson Anderson added two hits and two runs each and Luke Pierce two hits, a run and an RBI for the Lancers (15-6, 10-4). Mason Sprankle allowed one hit in 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

NC cruises

Rocco Capretta and Owen Helms recorded a hit and three RBIs apiece for Newark Catholic in a 12-2 victory against visiting Danville.

Mikey Hess added three hits and three runs and Nate Willis two hits and three runs for the Green Wave (10-12). Nathan Riggleman struck out two and allowed one earned run in two innings, and Owen Przymierski struck out seven in three hitless innings of relief.

Liberty nipped

Aiden Geiger struck out three and allowed three hits and two earned runs for Liberty Christian in a 3-2 loss at Fisher Catholic.

Geiger also doubled in Evan Dupler and scored on a James Rainier hit for the Eagles (7-11).
