Roundup: Evans, Northridge girls capture Licking Valley Invitational

Isabel Evans dominated in three events Thursday, leading Northridge's girls to the Licking Valley Invitational championship.

The Vikings scored 102 to edge out Licking Heights, which had 99. Newark was third out of the seven teams with 94, Valley totaled 89, Heath was sixth at 38 and Lakewood had 21.

Evans ruled the 100 hurdles (:14.54) and 300 hurdles (:43.66) while also taking the 200 in :26.38. Ava Travis captured the 400 in 1:01.2, Sarah Koker won the 800 in 2:34.9 and the Vikings 4x400 ran a victorious 4:24.

Addison Caudill swept the 1,600 (5:19) and 3,200 (11:38) for Heights and Sabrina Bauer won the long jump with 14-10.

Newark's girls ran to wins in the 4x200 (1:49.1) and the 4x100 (:51.88), while Cadiera Gordon took the 100 in :13.11 and Emma Ray cleared 9-3 to win the pole vault.

Licking Valley's Peyton Robey swept the shot (30-7) and discus (99-7).

New Philadelphia overpowered the seven-team boys field with 151 points to 109 by runnerup Valley. Then came Heath with 86, Northridge had 69, Newark 43, Lakewood 38 and Heights totaled 31.

The Hornfeck brothers, Quinn in the 300 hurdles (:41.7) and Cooper in the pole vault (13-6) took home titles, while Trevor Croak deli.vered an impressive 53-6.75 to win the shot put and Marshall Carr ruled the 200 in :23.31.

Heath's 4x800 relay started the meet with a victorious 8:21.68. Then, Carter Higgins heaved the discus a personal best 165-2 and Brayden Bayles leaped 20-10 to win the long jump.

Northridge's Nathan Burkey captured the 110 high hurdles in :16.0 and Lakewood's Isaiah Mitchell sped to a winning :10.92 in the 100.

BASEBALL

Utica nips NC

Roman Gamble scattered seven hits with one strikeout and one walk, and Aidyn Burgess delivered a two-run single in the eighth inning Thursday as visiting Utica blanked Newark Catholic 2-0 in the Licking County League-Cardinal Division.

Burgess and Gavin Tussey each had two hits for the Redskins (8-8, 6-4).

Losing pitcher Miller Hutchison also went the distance, allowing six hits with six strikeouts for the Green Wave (6-10, 4-7). Troy Johnston, Bryan McAnally and Rocco Capretta had two hits apiece.

Binckley excels

Wyatt Binckley fired a five-hitter with 12 strikeouts and three walks Thursday, leading visiting Heath past Johnstown 5-1 in the LCL-Cardinal.

Riley Baum went 4 for 4 with a triple, double and two singles for the Bulldogs (14-1, 9-0). Conner Toomey rapped three singles with an RBI and Paul Gould also drove home a run.

Nash Andrix had two singles with an RBI and Braeden Archibald took the loss for the Johnnies (4-10, 2-6).

Hornets top ZHS

Blake Caldwell tossed a two-hitter Thursday, striking out six and walking one, and visiting Licking Heights edged Zanesville 4-1 in the LCL-Buckeye.

Carson Johnson and Joel Busker doubled, while Kaleb Robbing and Blaine Claffey had RBIs for the Hornets (5-12, 3-7), who dropped the Blue Devils to 4-11, 1-8.

Watkins impressive

Brayden Windnagel threw a two-hitter Thursday, striking out six with only one walk, and visiting Watkins Memorial pounded out an 11-0 non-league victory against DeSales.

Trent Johnson singled and had three RBIs, Noah Ciotti doubled in a run, Angel Meija had an RBI single and Andrew Botts contributed two singles for the Warriors (12-5).

SOFTBALL

McNabb stars

Abbe McNabb pitched a six-hitter with 11 strikeouts and no walks Thursday, blanking visiting Bloom-Carroll 2-0 in a non-league game.

Zoey Shaw had an RBI double, Addison Justice also doubled, D'Neya Dennis had two hits and Liz Korns plated the other run for the Panthers (12-6).

Moore dominant

Shelby Moore drilled two doubles and three singles, going 5 for 5 and driving in two runs, and also pitched five innings to get the win in relief as visiting Heath outlasted Johnstown 10-8 in the LCL-Cardinal.

Kyndall Spicer smacked two doubles and a single, scoring four times for the Bulldogs (11-8, 6-5). Sydney Cottrell collected three hits and Savannah Lawson a pair with three RBIs, and Hannah Cash doubled.

Addy Zak had three singles and knocked in three runs for the Johnnies (4-14, 1-9), who also got a triple and single with two RBIs from Jenna Hochanadel, and two RBIs by Brooklynne Siegel.

Watkins now 20-0

Kendal Tellings went the distance Thursday, scattering seven hits with five strikeouts and one walk, as visiting Watkins Memorial built an early 6-0 lead and held on for a 6-4 win against Circleville.

Jordyn Wycuff belted a double and two singles, Cortney Dobbs doubled and singled and Ava McKee had a run-scoring double for the Warriors (20-0).

Lancers cruise

Carly Williams lashed a double and three singles with three RBIs and Riley Williams also drove home three with a double and single Thursday as host Lakewood drubbed Northridge 17-1 in the LCL-Cardinal.

Dani Stewart slammed a three-run homer for the Lancers (10-5, Cora Redman doubled and singled, Rachel Crist had an RBI double and Bailey Maidel also doubled. Ashlyn Carder allowed four hits over four innings to get the win.

Gracie Smith had two hits for the Vikings (4-12, 2-9).

Heights romps

Savanna Christ smacked a double and two singles with three RBIs and Lily Meidl slugged a pair of triples, pacing host Licking Heights to a 13-2, five-inning victory against Zanesville on Thursday in the LCL-Buckeye.

Chesney McPeck added two singles, while Alissa West, Evie Hays and Lydia Rauch doubled for the Hornets (8-8, 5-6). Kelsey Carter yielded four hits over five innings, striking out five to pick up the win.

Newark beaten

Visiting Newark (8-10, 5-5) managed just Calyn Music's single over five innings in a 21-0 Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division loss to Lancaster (18-2, 9-0).

BOYS TENNIS

Wildcats prevail

The doubles team of Trevor Anderson and Noah Devries rallied for a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 win Thursday, giving Newark a 3-2 victory against Franklin Heights.

Will Woughter won 6-1, 5-7, 7-5 at top singles and Layton Shaner scored a 6-2, 7-5 victory at third singles for the Wildcats.
