Rose Hanbury Denies Prince William Affair Rumors

As rumors about Rose Hanbury, the Marchioness of Cholmondeley, and Prince William escalate, Hanbury is denying any allegations of an affair.

Through her lawyers, Hanbury said "the rumors are completely false," in a new story published by Business Insider investigating the various conspiracy theories currently circulating about Kate Middleton's health and the state of her marriage. Kensington Palace declined to comment for the story.

Hanbury and her husband David Rocksavage, the 7th Marquess of Cholmondeley, live at Houghton Hall in Norfolk, near the Wales family's home Anmer Hall, and have reportedly been in the Waleses' social circle for some time. Rumors about Hanbury first began when the Sun reported Kate Middleton and Hanbury had a falling out (the story was soon denied in the Daily Mail).

In the years since, both Hanbury and her husband have appeared at several events alongside members of the royal family. Notably, last May, their eldest child, Oliver, was a page of honor at the coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla.

The Cholmondeleys were among the guests in attendance at the coronation. Here she is pictured leaving Westminster Abbey:

The rise in speculation regarding Hanbury and the Prince of Wales in recent weeks was directly tied to the rise in conspiracy theories surrounding the Princess of Wales more broadly as she continues to recover from her abdominal surgery. When Kate was pictured without her engagement or wedding rings in the photo released by Kensington Palace for Mother's Day in the UK, that only added fuel to the fire. (The portrait was later recalled by multiple news agencies for image manipulation and Kate issued an apology for editing the picture.)

The rumors reached a much wider, and more American audience when Stephen Colbert made reference to them on his late-night show, and specifically called out Hanbury by name.

"The kingdom has been all a flutter by the seeming disappearance of Kate Middleton. Well now, internet sleuths are guessing that Kate’s absence may be related to her husband and the future King of England William having an affair," Colbert said. "So, I think we all know who the alleged other woman is. Say it with me—the Marchioness of Cholmondeley—what a beautiful name!"

Yesterday, the Sun published photo and video of William and Kate shopping at a local farm stand in Windsor, near their home, Adelaide Cottage. It was the first video of Kate published since her surgery.
