The Rookie: 5 Things We Want to See in Season 6 (and 1 Thing We DON’T!)

How long has ABC’s The Rookie been off the air thus far? Let’s just say that its finale aired on May 2 — the same day the 148-day WGA strike began!

The writers are back to work now, though the striking actors have yet to earn a fair deal from the AMPTP. So it’s gonna be a while longer until the Mid-Wilshire Division reports back for duty. While we wait, let’s recap where the light procedural left off, then dive into TVLine’s wants (and one want-not) for the eventual Season 6.

Season 5’s finale revolved around a band of masked marauders who landed in the LAPD’s crosshairs after shooting Officer Thorsen in the back. A gathering of clues led Sgt. Grey’s squad to a septet of criminals who A) had beefs with Mid-Wilshire Division and B) had ties to the man who had purchased the theatrical masks worn by this mass menace. Lucy and Tim wound up teaming up — quite effectively! — against a veritable platoon of the shield-toting goons, and got a final assist from Nolan & Co., including sniper Nyla.

After their POI wound up choosing suicide by cop, Nolan wondered how that man could have had the money or means to recruit elite mercs like the one that attacked Nolan and Bailey at home earlier, or the guy who near-kidnapped Nyla and James’ daughter. We then cut to a well-dressed passenger (played by Orphan Black‘s Donny aka Kristian Bruun) in an Escalade, as he laughed at the LAPD’s all-out response to an event that is “away from our target.”

“And by the time they realize the damage we’ve done,” he gloated, “we’ll be long gone.”

Elsewhere in the finale, a very expectant Angela and Wes worked to solve a major puzzle clue at the hospital before welcoming a baby girl, and Thorsen was not long out of surgery when a Code Blue sounded and doctors/nurses stormed his room….

What should happen next? Glad you asked….

WANT: Thorsen lives!

WANT: Thorsen lives!

It was only two season premieres ago that The Rookie revealed that Officer Jackson West (played by original cast member Titus Makin Jr.) had been ruthlessly executed by crime queenpin Sandra de la Cruz’s henchmen. It’d be equally tragic — and, frankly, horrible optics for the show– to learn that Tru Valentino’s Officer Aaron Thorsen did not survive a similar execution attempt, by the new Big Bad’s masked goons, in the May finale.

WANT: Lopez rising!

WANT: Lopez rising!

Angela ranks high among our most favorite characters from The Rookie, and while it has been entertaining — at times, highly so! — to see her and Wes navigate not one but two early-marriage pregnancies whilst dealing with the likes of Sandra de La Cruz, Elijah Stone and “evil” legal eagle Monica Stevens, we would LOVE to now see Detective Lopez thrive and focus on accomplishing great things in her career. (While always making time for Mommy & Me playdates with Nyla and Leah, of course.)

WANT: Nolan faces adversity

WANT: Nolan faces adversity
WANT: Nolan faces adversity

Starting off as ostensibly the light procedural’s title character, Nathan Fillion’s John Nolan was dealt more than his share of drama in the early seasons, especially at the hands of Nick Armstrong and Rosalind Dyer (R.I.P., Annie). But as of late…? Things have been going a bit too smoothly for Nolan on both the professional and personal fronts. It is time for him to be given a new ongoing adversary — sometime to test that Boy Scout resolve of his — or for his home/love life to hit a nasty bump.

WANT: Good things, important things, for #Chenford

WANT: Good things, important things, for #Chenford
WANT: Good things, important things, for #Chenford

Supervisor/subordinate issues, fleeting romances with others, concerns about Lucy’s undercover work, an appearance by Tim’s ex-wife… and criminal doppelgängers! It seems like all of the obvious obstacles have been thrown at #Chenford, and they only emerge stronger with the overcoming of each. Season 5 gave to ‘shippers with both hands, and now Season 6 seems like a great time to let this relationship flourish and reach at least one major milestone, be it first ILYs, formalized cohabitation or… more.

WANT: Compelling payoff to that Big Bad cliffhanger

WANT: Compelling payoff to that Big Bad cliffhanger
WANT: Compelling payoff to that Big Bad cliffhanger

The closing seconds of last May’s season finale revealed that all of the mayhem being made by gangs of theatrically masked marauders was designed to lure the LAPD here, there and everywhere… except to the well -populated heart of Los Angeles, where an unnamed Big Bad (played by Orphan Black alum Kristian Bruun) was heading toward in an Escalade.

Who is this sharp-dressed, clearly malevolent man? And what is his actual agenda? We like an ongoing adversary, and thus hope that this dangling thread isn’t tied up too quickly, and too completely, in the Season 6 premiere.

DON’T WANT: Gimmicks, ugh!

DON’T WANT: Gimmicks, ugh!
DON’T WANT: Gimmicks, ugh!

Episodes filmed exclusively from the POV of body cams/security cams, yet another “documentary crew” visit (with showrunner Alexi Hawley playing the director)…. While it, yes, can be entertaining to serve up the occasional “themed” episode, let’s at least put these two gimmicks to bed for the foreseeable future.

What are YOUR hopes, wishes and dreams… and fears!… for The Rookie Season 6?
