Rocky Bleier, Steelers legend and Vietnam veteran, to visit Church of the Good Shepherd

A former Pittsburgh Steeler and Vietnam War veteran will be coming to Lebanon in May to talk about individuals reaching their "greatest potential."

Rocky Bleier, a four-time NFL Super Bowl Champion, will speak at Church of the Good Shepherd on Thursday, May 23 at 7 p.m. The event is hosted by Cornwall Manor in celebration of the community’s 75th Anniversary and to honor veterans.

Bleier’s presentation called "Be the Best You Can Be" will focus on succeeding through perseverance, hope, commitment and trust.

"Framed through parallels to football and Bleier’s personal journey as both a war veteran and four-time Super bowl champion with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Bleier’s inspirational story will explore both the structural and emotional aspects for individuals and organizations to reach their greatest potential," officials said in a press release Tuesday.

Just as Bleier was about to wrap up his rookie season with the Steelers in 1968, he had been drafted by the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. In combat the next year, he suffered several injuries that would reshape his life.

The injured veteran fought his way back to a professional football career that spanned more than a decade, officials said. Bleier has used that story to inspire countless others not to yield in the most difficult circumstances, and donated his time and energy to helping veterans like him reacclimate to the different lives they faced when they returned home.

“None of us knows what we’re capable of until we’re faced with a tough or unexpected challenge,” Harry McConnell, Cornwall Manor President & CEO, said in the release. “His talk focuses on facing challenges and recovering from setbacks and developing the unique gifts that have been given to us.”

Bleier is a member of the Congressional Committee for the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War and the Purple Heart Foundation. He is an active board member of the Warriors to Citizens Foundation which is devoted to helping soldiers, police, fire fighters, EMTs and their families recover from the psychological harm caused by career induced stress.

General admission tickets are $30 per person for the event and can be purchased at https://cornwallmanor.org.
