Rockford man receives 17-year prison sentence for attempted murder

A Rockford man has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for attempted murder, Winnebago County State’s Attorney J. Hanley announced Tuesday.

Alexander Vanpaseuth, 24, who was booked into the Winnebago County Jail on April 20, 2023, pleaded guilty to one count of attempt first-degree murder.

On Oct. 12, 2020, Rockford police responded to the 1000 block of Brown Avenue for a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found a victim, later identified as Sounphavong Vanpaseuth, suffering from a gunshot wound to his face.

Vanpaseuth was transported to a Rockford hospital then transferred to Madison to be treated for his injuries. After officers spoke with Sounphavong Vanpaseuth, Alexander Vanpaseuth was identified as a suspect.

Attempt first-degree murder is a class X felony punishable by six to 30 years in prison followed by three years of mandatory supervised release. Alexander Vanpaseuth must serve 85% of his sentence.
