Rockford discount supermarket to close next month

A discount supermarket at the corner of Alpine and Harrison roads in Rockford will be closing next month.

After nine years of business, the Save-A-Lot at 2514 South Alpine Road is closing May 20.

A sign on the door asks customers to visit the Save-A-Lot store at 1701 W. State St.

The South Alpine Road store opened in February 2015, filling a void created by the closing of a Schnucks grocery store at that location.

At the time, the store provided jobs to 20 people from the surrounding neighborhood.

Milwaukee-based Midland Management, LLC owns the Alpine Village shopping mall.

Ned Brickman, founder of the property management firm, said he is in talks with four ethnic grocery stores.

"I think if we have something more specific that can serve the demographics there, it should do very well," he said. "It's a good location."

In addition to the store on West State Street, Save-A-Lot also operates a store at 868 W. Riverside Blvd.
