Rockford community raises more than $110,000 for victims of March 27 mass stabbing

GoFundMe accounts created to help support the families of those killed or injured during a March 27 mass stabbing in Rockford have raised more than $110,000 to date.

The accounts — five in all — continue to raise money, accepting donations almost daily.

Romona "Mona" Schupbach, 63, and her son, Jacob "Jake" Schupbach, 23, were the first victims of the day. They were stabbed to death in their home.

The GoFundMe account established for the mother and son on March 28 has raised nearly $35,000. More than 450 individual donations have been made.

The GoFundMe account established for the family of 15-year-old Jenna Newcomb, the East High School sophomore who was beaten to death protecting her sister, Sarah, and a friend, has received 727 donations. More than $54,000 has been raised since the account launched on March 29.

A GoFundMe account for survivor Lindsey Craig, a woman who was stabbed multiple times both inside and outside her home in the neighborhood where the attacks took place, has raised more than $14,600. More than 200 individual donations have been made to help support Craig's recovery since March 29.

Survivor Keith Fahrney, a motorist who who stopped to help Craig as she was being attacked and ended up getting attacked himself, also has a GoFundMe account that was launched by his wife on March 29. The fund has been donated to more than 100 times, raising more than $6,000.

A fifth GoFundMe account was set up for Darlene Weber and her two children, Cathy Gilfillan, 23, and Jacob Vollmann, 21. The mother and her children also were attacked in their home on March 27.

The family members said they wanted to take some time off work after the attack to focus on their mental health and asked for financial support to help them get through the difficult time.

The account launched March 29 and has collected over $2,900 goal.

U.S. Postal Service letter carrier Jay Larson was stabbed and run over with a truck while on his mail delivery route. His family has asked that donations in Larson’s name be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Rockford or the Poor Clare Sisters of Rockford.

The man accused in the attack, Christian Soto, 22, of Rockford, remains in the Winnebago County Jail. He was arrested at the scene. He faces multiple counts of first-degree murder and other charges.
