Robert Pattinson Slept on an Inflatable Boat for Six Months Because He Didn’t Have Furniture

Robert Pattinson can now add furniture designer to his résumé—right under “vampire heartthrob” and “Suki Waterhouse’s boyfriend.” In a new interview, the Twilight star speaks to Architectural Digest about his newfound hobby, and candidly recalls a period in his life, as a young actor, when he had no furniture in his home at all—but made the best of it.
“There was a time when the only piece of furniture I had for about six months was an inflatable boat that would double as my couch, bed, and dining table,” he told the magazine. He joked, “I loved it very much, but it caused a lot of back problems.”
Now, designing furniture is one of Pattinson’s passions. He walked the magazine through his process for creating the unique nine-foot-long sofa that now lives in his home, which he shares with actor and singer Waterhouse.
“I started sketching pieces of furniture I thought would make people interact in a playful and informal way,” he said. “They all had disproportionate, oversized elements that were quite fun. And in the process of making some models out of clay, I found that organic overlapping curves had a similar effect.”
He added that he sketched the design in his free time, after wrapping up filming for The Batman, and tapped designer Nicole Gordon—with whom he had worked on two of his homes—to help him refine it. Pattinson’s creation is now displayed at Los Angeles furniture store JF Chen, and six additional made-to-order pieces are being sold. He is also designing a matching table and chairs.
Waterhouse has not commented on her partner of five years’ love of interior design, but she did talk about living with him during a guest appearance on Apple podcast Driven Minds. “I’ve been having such a crushing weight of anxiety because I’ve moved. I wasn’t there for the move, so everything just got boxed up and sent,” the actor told host Gillian Sagansky. She added that she hired a professional cleaner to help organize her “collection of mess.”
The Daisy Jones & The Six star, who said she got used to living alone prior to the move, continued: “It doesn’t feel like that much of a crazy thing. And I’m very lucky because he is so accepting of the mess and the chaos. He never says anything about it. He kind of thinks it’s like, charming. So I’m very lucky for that.”
