Robert Griffin III agreed to a new deal on Thursday, but it won’t be to line-up under center for an NFL team. Instead, the veteran quarterback will be headed to the broadcast booth.

Griffin III has accepted a job to join ESPN as a college football and NFL in-game analyst, as first reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. He will also contribute to ESPN’s studio coverage, including during the College Football Playoff and Super Bowl.

Rumors of Griffin’s move to broadcasting started to circulate this summer, as he’s already emerged as a rising star in the sports media industry. He spoke about why he chose to go with ESPN over other suitors and if he’s decided to move on fully from his playing career.

“ESPN has been great through this whole process and understanding that I still want to play,” Griffin said, per Joe Reedy of the Associated Press. “I still love the game. If that opportunity doesn’t come, I’ll be giving everything I have to ESPN and this process.”

The former Washington and Baltimore quarterback confirmed that he will work to stay in shape and be ready if another NFL team were to come calling.

“I think it’s a fun thing for me to be able to do a little bit of studio and call games. It’s a perfect situation,” Griffin said. “I am continuing to work out, stay ready and prepare for everything that could be coming in the future.”

Griffin spent 2018-2020 with the Baltimore Ravens where he backed up breakout star Lamar Jackson. Prior to his three-season stint in Baltimore, he played for the Cleveland Browns for one year in 2016.

At the start of his NFL career, Griffin III appeared ready to be one of the best quarterbacks in the league after he landed in Washington with the No. 2 overall pick in 2012. However, injuries hampered the 2012 Rookie of the Year and he never quite found his footing again.

Now that he’s headed to the broadcast booth with ESPN, Griffin will have another opportunity to stay around the game he loves.
