Robert Downey Jr. Celebrates 'Love Still in Bloom' on 18th Wedding Anniversary
Robert Downey Jr. is honoring his 18th anniversary with wife Susan Downey with a sweet yet simple tribute.
The Iron Man alum took to Instagram on their big day, Aug. 27, 2023, posting an intimate snapshot from the ceremony, which took place on the same day in 2005.
In the image, the actor donned a purple scarf draped over his tuxedo and leaned in to whisper in his wife's ear. Susan smiled as she listened, cloaked in a long veil and clutching a bouquet of white and purple flowers.
In much more casual attire, the couple recreated the photo in the second slide. He wore a yellow tee as he replicated his pose while Susan wore a white one, a collection of sunflowers taking the place of her wedding bouquet.
"18 years, love still in bloom!!" he wrote in the caption.
The couple met on the set of Gothika, which Susan produced, in 2003. He asked her out, but due to his tumultuous—and public—history with drug abuse, Susan wasn't sold on the idea.
“She told me, 'I'm not doing that [drug] dance with you. I'm drawing a line in the sand here.' She was absolutely clear about it. That doesn't mean that other women, business associates, movie directors, insurance companies, judges, and law enforcement hadn't been clear about it too. It was that, before I met Mrs. Downey, I just didn't give a goddamn. What changed is that I cared,” he told Parade in 2008.
He's been sober ever since. The pair now shares two children: son Exton, 11, and daughter Avri, 8. He also shares 29-year-old Indio Falconer Downey with ex-wife Deborah Falconer.
