Rob Lowe’s Unstable Renewed for Season 2 at Netflix With New Showrunner

Netflix is staying in business with Dragon, renewing its father-son comedy Unstable for an eight-episode second season, TVLine has learned.

Unstable stars Rob Lowe as Ellis Dragon, a “universally admired, eccentric, narcissist-adjacent biotech entrepreneur working to make the world a better place,” per Netflix’s official logline. To complicate matters further, Dragon is in an “emotional free-fall,” and his only hope may rest in his polar-opposite son Jackson Dragon (played by Lowe’s real-life son John Owen Lowe).

“It’s a dream come true for us to jump back into the world of Unstable,” the Lowes say in a statement. “Here’s to Season 2 and the many hours of family therapy that we will need along the way.”

Andrew Gurland (Married, Platonic) joins Season 2 as Unstable‘s new showrunner, executive-producing alongside the Lowes, Sean Clements and director Claire Scanlon.

Unstable‘s ensemble cast also includes Sian Clifford as Anna, Rachel Marsh as Luna, Emma Ferreira as Ruby and Aaron Branch as Malcolm. Recurring Season 1 guest stars included Fred Armisen as Ellis’ codependent therapist Leslie; Tom Allen and JT Parr as troublemaking twins TJ and Chaz, both members of the board at Dragon; and Christina Chang as Jean, a friend of Ellis’ late wife who also sits on the board.

News of Unstable‘s renewal comes just hours after Fox confirmed that the fifth season of 9-1-1: Lone Star, which stars Rob Lowe as firefighter Owen Strand, will not return until fall 2024.
