Future Hall of Fame tight end Rob Gronkowski has remained adamantly undecided on whether to return to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers – until recently.

Over the weekend, Gronkowski – jokingly or not – said he would guarantee his return on one condition. That condition being his former Patriots teammate Julian Edelman coming out of retirement and signing for the Buccaneers.

“If Julian signs with the Bucs right now, I’m coming back for a whole other year,” Gronkowski said. “Hands down… he needs to sign with the Bucs.”

It’s never easy to tell with Gronkowski whether he’s being serious or not with comments like that. But in this case he probably was – and NFL fans are already imagining the possibilities:

Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman played nearly a decade of football together in New England. During that run they reached five Super Bowls and won three.

Edelman stayed in New England for two more years while Gronkowski retired before returning in 2020. Gronkowski was traded to the Buccaneers and won a fourth Super Bowl with them. Edelman retired after the 2020 season.

Buccaneers fans have been pounding the table for Edelman to come out of retirement and join Gronkowski and Tom Brady in Tampa Bay. They’re clearly more interested in that move now than ever if it’s a condition for Gronkowski’s return.

Will Julian Edelman return and join the Buccaneers in 2022? Will Rob Gronkowski join the Buccaneers with or without him?
