Road work updates: Rail crossings, bridge over I-90 will be closed for construction

Norfolk Southern railroad crossings in western Erie County will be briefly closed for construction beginning May 6.

The plan is to remove and replace each crossing in one day. But it could take two days to get some crossings in and open, according to the railroad.

Here's the tentative schedule for closings:

  • May 6: Manchester, Eaton and Old Dutch roads, Fairview;

  • May 7: Blair Road, Fairview;

  • May 8: Fairplain Road, Girard;

  • May 9: Hagerty Street, Girard;

  • May 13: Mechanic Street and Elk Park and Middle roads, Girard;

  • May 14: Middle/Townline Road and two private crossings, East Springfield;

  • May 15: Lucas and Happy Valley roads and Depot Road/Route 215, East Springfield;

  • May 16: Scott and Nash roads, East Springfield.

Bargain Road bridge

McKEAN — The Bargain Road bridge over Interstate 90 in McKean Township will be closed for construction beginning in mid-May.

Traffic will be detoured onto Hershey Road, Route 99 and Grubb Road.

The bridge deck and portions of the road leading to the bridge will be resurfaced. The $763,516 project also will include minor structural repairs.

Work is expected to begin May 13 and to be completed in September.

The bridge was built in 1959 and is crossed by about 750 vehicles daily, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

Girard paving

GIRARD — Construction has resumed on Route 20 in Girard.

Work to resurface the road from Chestnut Street in Girard Borough to Imperial Parkway in Girard Township began in 2023 and is expected to be completed this fall.

Lanes will be closed to accommodate construction. Flaggers are controlling traffic.

The $3.7 million project also will include traffic signal, sign, sidewalk and drainage improvements.
