Road to 270: Game out 2020 election results in interactive map

It all comes down to 270.

The 2020 election — like nearly every presidential race before it — will be decided by the Electoral College, which assigns every state with a set number of electoral votes based on its number of congressional districts and Senate seats.

There are a total of 538 electoral votes, and whichever presidential candidate is first to clinch a simple majority — at least 270 — wins the election.

The Electoral College system, which was established in 1787, has often benefited Republicans, as rural, traditionally red states with vast land masses are assigned large numbers of votes despite relatively small populations.

President Trump lost the popular vote against Hillary Clinton in 2016, but still won the election thanks to the Electoral College. With polls putting him far behind Joe Biden this year, Trump’s hoping to pull off a 2016 redux.

Can’t wait for Election Day? This map allows voters to game out different Electoral College scenarios, with past election results as starting points.
