Roaches, pink slime, mold-like substance found at Tarrant County restaurants

One of the 133 Tarrant County restaurants inspected from July 31 to Aug. 13 was closed due to serious health code violations, according to data from the county compiled by the Star-Telegram.

Jack in the Box at 3500 Grapevine Mills Parkway in Grapevine was closed for one day due to serious health code violations on Aug. 8, according to the county.

Tarrant County Public Health inspects and scores all restaurants in Tarrant County except for those located in Fort Worth, Arlington, Euless and North Richland Hills. In inspections conducted by the county, the higher the score the worse the restaurant did. A score of zero is considered perfect.

At Jack in the Box in Grapevine, inspectors gave the store a score of 30 and said it had to be closed because the walk-in cooler was not being maintained at the proper temperature. The restaurant fixed the issue and was reopened the following day.

The highest score in Tarrant County inspections during that period was at Chetras Kitchen, 2817 Central Drive in Bedford, on Aug. 8, with a score of 37. Inspectors noted violations including mold-like growth in the ice machines, unclean conditions in the restaurant and improperly stored food, among others.

Other high scores included:

  • Bud’s Snoballs in Bedford, 27

  • El Piquin Mexican Restaurant in Grapevine, 27

  • Pearl Chinese Restaurant in Grapevine, 25

Violations at El Piquin Mexican Restaurant included roaches, with inspectors instructing the restaurant to hire a pest control agency.

Other inspector findings of note included:

  • Lily’s Cafe in Everman, inspectors found roaches in the kitchen on Aug. 2, then again on Aug. 4. Inspectors said the restaurant told them on Aug. 4 they had called pest control, but there were not dead bugs. Inspectors said the restaurant will be required to send a copy of the pest control invoice to the inspector.
