Riverside Lions Club donates to local groups
NORTH SEWICKLEY TWP. ― The Riverside Lions Club has donated $3,400 to local charities in memory of Sue Westlund.
The money was earned at the annual September Basket Raffle held at the Moose Club.
Chip Campbell, president of the club, said the proceeds were donated to charities supported by Sue Westlund who recently died.
"Sue was not a member of the Lions Club, but she was an integral part of the basket raffle," Campbell said. "She was a take-charge woman and worked very hard for to make the event a success."
Campbell's wife, Lynn, was the master of ceremonies for the event, which is one of the premiere fundraisers in the Ellwood City area.
The club donated $1,000 to the Ellwood City Area Public Library, $1,000 to the Divine Grace Food Bank and $1,000 to the American Cancer Society. The $400 dollars left over was given as $25 vouchers to teachers from Ellwood City Area and Riverside schools to spend at the library's October book sale, making it a win/win for the library and the schools.
Chip Campbell, a member of the Lions Club for 20 years and president for the last eight years, said the club also collects school supplies and hygiene products for five schools in Riverside and Ellwood.
Founded in 1962, the Riverside Lions Club serves the Ellwood City area and Beaver County. It assists in obtaining eyeglasses for those in need, supports the Riverside School District by honoring a Student of the Month and offers two $500 scholarships each year.
It also donates money to the food banks in the area and provides the opportunity for two members to attend Beacon Lodge camp each year.
"Every dollar we raise goes back to helping others, nothing is deducted to cover overhead costs," Campbell said.
