Rita Wilson Puts Tom Hanks At Ease When He's Nervous
Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson’s love story began more than 30 years ago, but they still look like smitten lovers who’ve only just fallen for each other. (Yes, even when they were both diagnosed with COVID-19.) They’re very much aware that everyone considers their relationship flawless, delightful, even a national treasure—but insist their marriage is only so captivating because they’ve worked at it through the good and the bad.
“I won't deny that providence was part of us finding each other, but our relationship isn't magic—the way it's shown in movies,” Tom told Oprah in a 2001 interview. “Not that marriage doesn't come close to being hell in a handbasket sometimes. But we both know that no matter what, we'll be with each other—and we'll get through it,” he added. And for that reason, Tom says he and Rita “laugh just as much now at 2 in the morning as [they] always have.”
When Rita was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, she told The New York Times, “I was so amazed, so blown away by the care my husband gave me.” She says the intimate time they spent together during her treatment made them even closer.
Now, there’s no doubt Tom and Rita’s union will remain a natural treasure until the end of time, but sometimes it’s nice to have visuals to back up all the kind words and gushing interviews. Ahead, Karen Donaldson, a body language expert, breaks down Tom and Rita’s body language over the years to prove just how perfect these two are for each other and the rest of us onlookers.
Tom and Rita have no doubts about the strength of their marriage.
"[Tom] is standing with his legs and body taking up a lot of physical space. These body language cues tells us that he is has a high level of self-confidence and is pleased at what he is looking at," Donaldson explains.
Rita, on the other hand, is standing just as confidently with her shoulders, back, and chest out, inviting Tom's gaze. They way she sees it, they've got a good thing going, so why shouldn't he look on proudly?
They're on the same page and always have been.
From their hands to their feet, Tom and Rita are totally in sync on numerous levels in this pic, says Donaldson. "Both of their heads are [titled] and their facial expressions mimic one another which indicates two like-minded people who trust each other," she says. While yes, they have their own careers, experiences, and opinions, when it comes to togetherness, it's pretty easy for these two.
Rita puts Tom at ease.
Tom's tightlipped smile signals to Donaldson that he might be "stifling his emotions" and feeling uneasy. Rita minimizing the distance between them by leaning on him is her way of putting him at ease and helping an uncomfortable or nervous Tom loosen up a bit.
They adore each other.

Donaldson immediately picked up on a "high level of physical attraction." How? Because their bodies are practically glued to each other. By holding each other close and resting their hands on each other, Donaldson knows there's a ton of mutual care and ease in this intimate relationship. Instead of growing apart over the years, they've clearly maintained that attraction they first acted on when they met in the '80s.
Tom is proud of and proud to be with Rita.
Rita's body language is loaded with appreciation for Tom as he speaks at her star ceremony at the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. She expresses this by holding her head high in amazement that she's with a man who loves her the way Tom does, a full smile, and by angling her body and shoulders back so she can take him in.
They're happiest when they're together.
"The way their fingers are intertwined as they hold hands indicates their eagerness to be closer to each other," says Donaldson. It also helps that Tom's fully turned his body toward Rita to whisper something in her ear. His closing the gap between them points to the strong bond that's still evident these days. Rita's grip on Tom's hand and her genuine smile are clear signs that she's all for Tom's commitment to always be by her side.
