Ridley Scott has revealed he regrets his decision to direct Alien: Covenant over Blade Runner 2049.

With both films due for release in 2017, a clash in filming schedules meant the Hollywood director was forced to make a decision to choose between the two.

An announcement in 2014 revealed that Scott would no longer be directing Blade Runner: 2049. Shortly after, he stepped in to lead the sci-fi horror, Alien: Covenant.

Now, in a recent interview with Empire, Scott admitted that he wishes he chose to work on the Blade Runner sequel instead.

"I shouldn't have had to make that decision," he said. "But I had to. I should have done Blade Runner 2."

Scott has since returned to working on Blade Runner properties with Prime Video's upcoming limited series Blade Runner 2099.

"I'm one of the producers," Scott told Esquire. "It's all set years on. To me, it circles the idea of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World."

The new series takes place 50 years after the events of Blade Runner 2049. But when it comes to Blade Runner 2099's plot, Scott has kept his cards close to his chest.

While details behind the series remain unknown, Scott has previously confirmed an estimated length for the show. Speaking to BBC Today in 2021, he revealed that the series will most likely be around ten hours long.

The original Blade Runner movie, set in a dystopian future Los Angeles in 2019, was released in 1982, starring Harrison Ford.

Its sequel, Blade Runner 2049, was released in 2017, starring Ryan Gosling alongside Ford.

Alien: Covenant is available to watch on Disney+, while Blade Runner 2049 is available to stream on Apple TV. A release date is yet to be announced for Prime Video's Blade Runner 2099.
