Ridgewood's David Madden advances in the 'Jeopardy!' invitational tournament

Everyone's favorite game show "Jeopardy!" had a winner from North Jersey on Tuesday as David Madden from Ridgewood advanced to the semifinals on the TV show's invitational tournament.

Madden is no stranger to the iconic game. The academic competition director has been competing on "Jeopardy!" for almost two decades.

He is also no stranger to winning these games and some may even consider him a pro. Madden was a 19-game super champion between seasons 21 and 22. In 2006, he was the Tournament of Champions semifinalist. He competed in the 2019 all-star games which he won as champion under "Team Brad." His total regular-season winnings accumulate to $430,400.

Madden dominated Tuesday's matchup, collecting $18,401 as his final tally. He answered nine answers correct and only two incorrect in the "Jeopardy!" round, and he answered 11 questions correct and zero incorrectly in the double "Jeopardy!" round.

The categories for the first round of Tuesday's show were Flat Earth, Pick A Card, Any Card, Mammals, 4-Word TV Synopses, Magazines and Sporty Talk.

Arthur Chu, a writer from Cleveland, was actually in the lead after the first round, but Madden was able to make up ground by answering four correct at the $1,000 level.

The categories for the double "Jeopardy!" round were Supreme Court Justices, Short Shakespeare, Religious Ranks & Titles, Museums Spread Their Wings, World Star and Feeling Jittery.

Chu gave Madden a close game answering overall 19 out of 21 questions correct, but lost $10,000 on an incorrect response.

The Final Jeopardy was, 'In his “Natural History” Pliny described it as “argentum vivum”' with the answer being "What is Mercury?"

The quarterfinals for the invitational tournament will continue through Monday with semifinal dates to be announced later.
