This restaurant was a Wynwood pioneer. After moving to Doral, it’s now closing

After seven years of serving up some of the most nutrition-rich food in Miami, della bowls is closing for good.

Founded by Della Heiman Goldkind, the plant-based restaurant began life as a food truck in 2015 at the late, lamented Wynwood Yard, the first culinary incubator in Miami and one of the first community hang-out spots in the Wynwood neighborhood.

The truck specialized in build-your-own bowls with a base of rice, quinoa or greens, a protein of choice, vegetables and sauce. Upgrades — avocados or hummus or toasted coconut — were encouraged, and della bowls was named the city’s best food truck by the Miami New Times in 2016.

When The Wynwood Yard closed in 2019 to make way for a developer, della bowls migrated to the new Doral Yard, co-founded by Goldkind and Joe Furst. It reopened in 2020 during the heart of the COVID pandemic, offering online cooking classes and a digital cookbook, “della bowls at home.”

Now, Doral Yard remains, but della bowls will shut down on July 24, so get your avocado toast while you can.

“I’ve worn two hats, as both the CEO and founder of The Doral Yard and della bowls, and have decided to place my focus entirely on The Doral Yard,” Heiman Goldkind wrote in a statement, also thanking chefs Julie Frans and Trina Sargalski. “While I’m sad to say goodbye to della bowls, I feel so proud of the amazing community we’ve built and the opportunity to have played a role in South Florida’s plant-based movement.”

Meanwhile, Doral Yard continues to expand. It welcomed its first standalone restaurant in 2021: Barbakoa by Finka, from Chef Eileen Andrade. A new poke concept, Pokekai, which has restaurants in Brickell and Orlando, is scheduled to open soon. In August, Los Buenos, from the popular Miami brand Coyo Taco, will bring tacos, burritos and other Mexican to the Yard.

Later in the summer, a Juan Valdez coffee kiosk is slated to open as well.

The Doral Yard remains open, with more concepts due to open this summer.
