New restaurant from West Sixth founder coming to booming Lexington dining district

A new restaurant from one of the founders of West Sixth Brewery is coming to the booming Jefferson Street corridor.

On Thursday, the Urban County Planning Commission voted unanimously to approve a zone change from an industrial zone to a business zone for less than a half acre at 469 and 471 Jefferson Street.

The zone change now goes to the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council for final approval. No one spoke in opposition to the zone change Thursday.

Pizza Pio LLC plans to renovate the former Jefferson Street Coffee building and remove the parking at 469 Jefferson Street to create patio and dining space for a new restaurant. It’s in the former location of Jefferson Street Coffee, which apparently has closed.

City planners recommended approval of the zone change.

Pizza Pio’s Brady Barlow, who is also an owner of West Sixth Brewery, said the project is still in its early stages and more details will be forthcoming once the zone change is final. Barlow said his other partners in West Sixth Brewery are not involved with the new restaurant, which is a few blocks from the popular brewery on Jefferson and Sixth streets.

The new restaurant will be a small neighborhood pizzeria, Barlow said. Pizza will be available whole and by the slice, with limited seating indoors and patio seating. Delivery will also be available when the restaurant opens.

The building has a mural on the side of a fox wearing a crown and that will be staying, Barlow said. “I’m a fan of the fox,” he said.

Restaurants in Jefferson Street dining district

Jefferson Street has become one of Lexington’s go-to dining and entertainment districts with multiple restaurants and bars opening over the past decade. It’s anchored by West Sixth and Smithtown Seafood at one end and includes County Club, The Green Lantern Bar, Distilled on Jefferson, The Blue Heron Steakhouse, Stella’s Kentucky Deli, Villainous, The Goose, Sorella Gelateria and Apiary catering venue. Justins’ House of Bourbon sits at the other end on Main Street.

It’s the second new dining establishment coming from Barlow, who is also opening CIBON, a boutique wine and cheese bar with a bourbon tasting room on Rosemont Garden.
