Reopening one of Boise’s all-time best patios, new restaurant and bar aims for spring debut

Something new is brewing in Hyde Park.

The former Sun Ray Cafe, which closed last fall at 1602 N. 13th St., will be reborn as another restaurant.

Lost Grove Brewing plans to take over the space and its iconic patio.

“It should be a great addition to the Hyde Park neighborhood,” owner Jake Black said, “with a fun brewery tasting room vibe that will be serving lunch and dinner seven days a week.”

There’s no firm opening date, but Black hopes to have the fresh venture welcoming customers by spring.

The menu will feature “Idaho pub fare with an Asian influence,” according to a media release posted after this article originally published.

Lost Grove’s Hyde Park destination also will offer a full liquor bar.

Opened in 2017, Lost Grove Brewing, which serves pizza, is at 1026 S. La Pointe St. Lost Grove also pours brews — for now — at Lost Shack, 3724 S. Eckert Road in Harris Ranch, a collaboration with Sushi Shack food truck and catering. That restaurant will be renamed Sushi Shack as Lost Grove turns over the reins to focus on the Hyde Park operation.

‘Awesome patio,’ new era

When Sun Ray shuttered, it was the end of an era. For atmosphere alone, the patio long was regarded as one of Boise’s best.

Neighbors, Hyde Park shoppers and cyclists had socialized for decades at the popular gathering spot, sipping beer in the heart of the North End. Prior to becoming Sun Ray in 2007, it was the longtime home of Lucky 13, a similar concept that moved to Harris Ranch.

Describing itself as “Idaho’s first B Corp brewery,” Lost Grove has built a fan base in the Lusk District by creating quality beers and offering a roomy patio not far from the Boise River and Greenbelt.

Plenty of Idahoans will be eager to see Lost Grove take over the beloved, historic Hyde Park hangout.

“We are so excited for this new location,” Black said in the media release. “The new space has such an awesome patio, and it’s a priority of ours to open this spring so folks in the community can enjoy the sunny outdoor seating and, of course, delicious pints of Lost Grove beer.”
