Restaurant inspections: Scores for Rise and Shine Donuts, Denny’s, X Bar Steakhouse, more

The Food Establishment Inspection Report is a weekly report that appears Sundays. Information is taken from reports provided by the Environmental Health Department, and individual reports can be viewed at its website, http://amarillo.gov/departments/community-services/environmental-health/foodinspections. A numerical grading system is now being used, with a score of 100 points being equivalent to zero demerits.

• 100 points – No major violation at the time of inspection

• 85 points – Considered an average score

• 70 points or below – Requires re-inspection within 24 hours

• COS – Corrected on site during inspection

These points correspond to the following letter grades:

• A – 90 to 100

• B – 80 to 89

• C – 70 to 79

• F – 69 and below

(A/93) Belmar Elementary, 6342, Adirondack Trail. Mold inside ice machine; employee did not wash hands when switching gloves or touching face. COS.

(A/96) Crockett Middle School, 4720 Floyd Ave. Pizza stored in warmer at improper temperature. COS. Broken wall tiles next to mop sink need repairing; wood above mop sink needs to be sealed. Correct by 05/22.

(B/81) Denny’s Restaurant #6673, 2116 S. Georgia St. Pancake batter at improper temperature in reach-in cooler in front of fryers; ham and mashed potatoes at improper temperature; no sanitizer bucket available in cooking area. COS. No Certified Food Manager on site; employee food handler certificates on file were expired; hand sink on make line dirty with food debris and other trash; drawer to cooler under burners falling apart. Correct by 03/07. Gap at bottom of both back doors must be sealed; heavy food debris and grease build-up on several coolers and cooking equipment; dust and other debris in shelf area above expo line on cook side; heavy grease and food debris build-up on floor and area under equipment on cook line; coving coming off wall in dry storage room; spackled ceiling in dish washing area needs to be re-spackled and painted so ceiling is smooth, durable, easily cleanable and nonabsorbent; back door handle must be secured and no holes in door; back door must be smooth, durable and easily cleanable; food debris and trash inside floor drains; food handler certificates must be maintained on premises at establishment; CFM certificate must be posted in view of customers; establishment scorecard from most recent inspection must be posted on door or in easy view of customers. (A/93) Gene Howe Elementary, 5108 Pico Blvd. Inside of ice machine dirty; excess hard water build-up on outside of ice machine chipping off when touched; hard water deposits falling onto packages of hamburger buns stored beside ice machine; mice droppings and uncovered rodenticide near mechanical ware washing machine and next to hot water heater. Correct by 02/26. Paint peeling off rusted pipes around large mechanical dishwasher area (pipes need to be sealed). Correct by 05/22.

Multiple surfaces with heavy build-up of dirt and dust; AC swamp cooler in office area fell through acoustic tiled ceiling and ceiling must be repaired to be smooth, easily cleanable and non absorbent; a second coat of paint is needed on bathroom ceiling tiles to properly repel water (repeat violation); three-compartment sink faucet leaking. Correct by 05/22.

Kolaches and other breakfast sandwiches in hot holding unit at improper temperature; establishment has no written procedure to use time as a control that has been approved by Environmental Health; no sanitizer prepared; employees did not wash hands when switching between tasks and using personal cell phones; allergen sign must be posted; prepared foods in kitchen not date marked; dough stored in garbage bags (repeat violation); towel used to cover tamales in hot holding unit (repeat violation); live roaches in back storage area; self-closer on back door needs repairing; employee personal items must be stored in a designated area; all wet rags must be stored in sanitizer solution between uses; Kolaches uncovered (repeat violation); heavy mold build-up on soda nozzles (repeat violation); multiple areas of kitchen need cleaning (repeat violation); no light in back storage area; vents on kitchen ceiling need cleaning. (B/82) The King & I, 104 15th St., Canyon. Bottle of seasoning sauce requiring refrigeration after opening sitting out at room temperature; employees did not change gloves or wash hands when going from task to task. COS. Heavy build-up of grease and debris on toaster used in sushi bar area. Correct by 02/25. No date markings on any food items in coolers; grocery bags used to store raw vegetables. Correct by 03/03.
