Fresh, affordable salads coming to North Main Street

Fresh Salads Ect., a new salad, soups and wraps shop, will open on Jan. 16 at 120 N. Main St. It is replacing Creme Shack, which is moving to 109 N. Main St.

Fred Williams, owner of Fresh Salads Ect. and Creme Shack, is bringing a new salad concept to North Main with intentions to have scratch-made healthy eats costing no more than $10. The former CFO for Ovation Brands has spent time analyzing food establishments and noticed a clear void downtown.

"We get feedback from people who work downtown, and it's too expensive to eat, so we thought we'd open a place that was more reasonably priced and healthier," said Williams. "If people don't crave your food, it won't work. So making it healthy and tasty is what we plan to do."

Fresh Salads Ect. will have hours from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

New Big Apple Doughnuts & Cafe opens in Taylors

Big Apple Doughnuts & Cafe opened its third local doughnut franchise on Dec. 28 at 3245 Wade Hampton Blvd. in Taylors.

Known as a doughnut and coffee cafe, its variety of croissant breakfast sandwiches is a noteworthy portion of its menu. Big Apple also offers Boba Tea, Cold Brew and lunch sandwiches.

In Taylors, store owner George San offers a similar menu to the 219 W. Mauldin Road location. Store hours are from 6 a.m. until 2 p.m., or until doughnuts sell out.

Big Apple Doughnuts & Cafe's original brick-and-mortar building is located at 1222 Reynolds Ave. in Greenwood, which doubles as a bakery and full restaurant.

"We are a social experience, so people stay for a while," said Michelle Dodge, owner at BridgeWay Brewing Co. "There's nothing like this in the Mauldin, Simpsonville area. Reid's Fine Foods closes near downtown Greenville

The Charlotte, North Carolina-based upscale grocery, wine and restaurant at 1 Laurens Road has gone out of business after nearly three years in downtown Greenville. A sign on Reid's storefront door on Dec. 28 announced the closing.

"We signed a lease two or three weeks before COVID hit and never got any traction," said Tom Coker, managing partner at Reid's Fine Foods. "We had a lot of open and closed days during that time frame and didn't get off to a good start. It was the best business decision we could make at the time."

According to Coker, some employees received severance packages. But he also mentioned employee retention as being another hurdle for the grocer.

Reid's was the first and only store in South Carolina. There are currently four in Charlotte.
