How will Republican Party be remembered?

In 1852, the big national issue was slavery. The Whigs lost the presidency to the Democrats and split over that issue along sectional lines, with Northern Whigs helping to form the new Republican Party. The Whigs ceased to exist.

Today the big national issue is democracy. Will the “strong man,” anti-democratic stance of Trump Republicans prevail or will Republicans return to their true conservative, democratic roots? If not the latter, Republicans will go the route of the Whigs.
