The Chicago Cubs had an all-time sell-off at the trade deadline. Just minutes before the 4 p.m. ET trade deadline, we got one final blockbuster: Kris Bryant is heading to the NL West leading San Francisco Giants.

The Giants were a bit of an afterthought entering the season, after the arms race that the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres had this offseason. And yet, at the trade deadline they are three games up on the Dodgers for the division lead with a baseball-best 64-38 record.

Bryant is a very valuable bat and versatile defensive addition for the Giants, able to play both first and third base and the corner outfield spots. On the year, he’s hitting .267 with a .861 OPS, 18 home runs, and 51 runs batted in. The 2016 NL MVP and World Series champion made his fourth all-star game this year.

Jeff Passan of ESPN broke the news, perhaps the last true blockbuster ahead of the deadline. It helps serve as a counter to the giant move that the Dodgers made earlier in the week, adding Max Scherzer and Trea Turner in a megadeal with the Washington Nationals.

In return for Kris Bryant, the Giants are sending back outfielder Alexander Canario and righty pitcher Caleb Killian, two top 30 prospects from the Giants farm system. Canario was with the Single-A San Jose Giants, while Killian is a bit farther along, with the Double-A Richmond Flying Squirrels.

The Cubs really blew things up this week, sending Anthony Rizzo to the New York Yankees, Javier Baez to the New York Mets, and Craig Kimbrel to the Chicago White Sox ahead of the deadline.

The NL West race is shaping up to be one of the most competitive we’ve ever seen, and the league may take both NL Wild Card spots. With both New York teams, the Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays, and White Sox all having productive trade deadlines, among others, we should be in for one heck of a finish for this MLB season.
