Report: Ohio State, Texas to open 2024-25 men’s basketball season in Las Vegas

Ohio State will officially open the first full season of the Jake Diebler era in Las Vegas.

The Buckeyes will play Texas at T-Mobile Arena on Nov. 4 to begin the 2024-25 season, The Dispatch has confirmed. CBS' Jon Rothstein was the first to report the game.

The game is the second against a marquee team from Texas on the schedule for the season. The Buckeyes will play the return game of a home-and-home series at Texas A&M after the Aggies won in Columbus last season.

Ohio State will host its own multi-team event around Thanksgiving, but other details about the schedule have not yet been announced. The Buckeyes have been seeking a marquee home game to add to their schedule.

It’s not immediately clear if this Texas game takes the place of that game. Ohio State will also play Kentucky in the CBS Sports Classic at a location to be determined.

The Buckeyes and Longhorns played each other on March 17, 1986. Ohio State won 71-65 in a second-round NIT game played at St. John Arena. It is the only prior meeting between the schools.

Diebler was hired as the full-time coach after Chris Holtmann was fired on Feb. 14.
