Report: Jets, Bears Discussed Notable Quarterback Trade

The Chicago Bears have a surprising glut of quarterbacks with veterans Andy Dalton and Nick Foles joining rookie first-rounder Justin Fields for the upcoming season. And it appears the New York Jets have some interest in taking one of them off their hands.

According to Brian Costello of the New York Post, the Bears and Jets have discussed a potential trade for Foles. Costello noted that Jets general manager Joe Douglas has familiarity with Foles when both were members of the Philadelphia Eagles.

But Costello also noted that a deal between the two is “unlikely” to happen. The reason for that is Foles’ bloated contract, which guarantees him upwards of $4 million in each of the next two seasons.

“The Jets and Bears have had discussions, according to sources, but it seems unlikely that any deal will happen. The problem is Foles’ contract,” Costello wrote. “He is due to make $4 million this season and next. The Bears surely would have to eat some of that contract to facilitate a trade. Some may argue the Jets should wait to see if the Bears cut Foles, but that seems unlikely…”

The New York Jets currently plan to make rookie No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson their Week 1 starter. Backing him up right now are James Morgan and Mike White, two quarterbacks without a single NFL pass thrown between them.

In Chicago, Dalton is slated to be the starter, with Fields supposedly set to take over the starting job sometime midseason. As a result, Nick Foles is probably the odd man out in Chicago.

While the Jets and Bears would both benefit from a Foles trade, it doesn’t look like that’s happening anytime soon.

But never say never when it comes to preseason trades.
