Report: The Injury Diagnosis Is In For Marcus Mariota
The Las Vegas Raiders escaped with a dramatic win over the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night, but did come away with a pretty substantial injury. Backup quarterback Marcus Mariota, who the team had bigger plans for than your average QB2, will be out for a good chunk of time.
The former Heisman winner did not attempt a pass on Monday, but did step in for Derek Carr for a 31-yard run. During that play, his only snap of the game, he suffered an injury to his quad.
According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, he is now “expected to be out multiple weeks” after the play. Rapoport says that Gruden and his staff were planning to “sprinkle” Mariota, a great athlete under center, into the offense in spots.
It also greatly reduces the team’s potential effectiveness if anything happens to Carr. The team has been carrying three quarterbacks, with Nathan Peterman set to step into the QB2 role.

To add insult to literal injury, the team failed to provide an injury update on Mariota during Monday’s game. As reported by ProFootballTalk, that could bring on a fine from the league. Gruden only mentioned the injury on Tuesday.
In 2018, the franchise was fined $20,000 for failing to update the status of injured offensive lineman Kelechi Osemele after he didn’t travel for a road game. We could see a similar situation play out here.
Marcus Mariota, a former No. 2 overall pick by the Tennessee Titans, joined the Raiders last season. He stepped in for an injured Carr in one game last year, completing 17-of-28 passes for 226 yards and a touchdown, adding 88 rushing yards and a score.
