The standoff between Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers seems poised to extend deep into the summer. But according to one report, there is a way for Aaron Rodgers to opt out of the 2021 season and still retain the bulk of his money.

On Friday, ProFootballTalk reported that the NFL is granting “broad powers” to players looking to opt out this season. Players who do so would not receive a stipend for the 2021 season like they did last year, but they could do so with no questions asked about their decision.

Per the report, Rodgers would not have to forfeit his $11.5 million signing bonus for the 2021 season. He might also retain up to $6.8 million in roster bonuses.

However, a decision on that front would have to be made very soon. The deadline for opt-outs under these conditions is July 2 – and it is completely irrevocable.

It’s not the worst idea in the world if Aaron Rodgers really is determined not to play for the Packers in 2021. If he goes through with what many believe will be a holdout but doesn’t get a new deal, he stands to lose all of that money along with several million dollars in fines.

In this scenario (assuming PFT is correct), Rodgers would be able to skip this year, keep a good chunk of money and avoid fines.

But Rodgers doesn’t have much time to make a decision here. And there are no take-backs here.

We’ll find out in just a few days just how determined Aaron Rodgers is to not play for Green Bay this year.
