Repairs complete after 'major gas leak' causes Xavier University to close

Xavier University closed its Evanston campus Friday as Duke Energy worked to repair a gas leak.

The university first alerted students just after 10 a.m., saying the campus' closure was due to a "major gas leak." At 11:47 a.m., another alert said the leak had been contained, though crews were still working.

Duke Energy has located the damaged gas line and repairs are expected to be completed early Friday evening, said Doug Ruschman, the university's associate vice president for marketing and communications.

Duke Energy spokesperson Jeff Brooks told Enquirer media partner Fox19 a little after 4:45 p.m. that crews completed repairs and are restoring the gas flow.

The Enquirer will update this story.
