Rep. Nydia Velázquez endorses Antonio Reynoso for Brooklyn borough president

The battle for Brooklyn continued Tuesday with Councilman Antonio Reynoso clinching a key endorsement for his borough president run.

Rep. Nydia Velázquez said she was backing the progressive lawmaker.

“Together, Antonio and I have fought side by side for environmental justice in North Brooklyn, to reform the Brooklyn Democratic Party, and to secure affordable housing, quality education, and dignity for our neediest neighbors,” she said in a statement.

“I am confident that as borough president, Antonio will bring bold, transformative change to Borough Hall by centering the values of compassion and equity in his work to deliver real results that will uplift all Brooklynites,” Velázquez added.

Reynoso has established himself as one of the most progressive members of the City Council during his seven years on the body. He voted against last year’s controversial city budget, saying it didn’t go far enough to cut NYPD funding. Reynoso has also come out as a frequent critic of police practices while advocating for environmental causes as chair of the Council’s Sanitation Committee.

“I am humbled and so proud to accept the endorsement of one of my greatest mentors, Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez,” Reynoso said in a statement. “Velázquez has demonstrated to me what the relentless pursuit of justice on behalf of working families and underserved communities looks like.”

Other candidates for Brooklyn borough president include Councilman Robert Cornegy. Primaries for beep, mayor and other offices are scheduled for June 22.
