Rep. McCarthy bashes Biden, talks possibility of becoming House speaker

Get ready for “Speaker” McCarthy?

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said Sunday he sees an “opportunity” to become speaker of the House if Republicans flip the chamber in this year’s midterm elections.

But speaking on “Fox News Sunday,” he said he was focused on helping elect Republicans, adding that they would hold the Biden administration “accountable” if they take the House majority.

He also repeated GOP talking points slamming Biden for recent economic woes.

“Why [are] the president’s approval numbers so low? It’s the wasteful, irresponsible spending that’s led to higher prices and inflation,” McCarthy said, going on to bash Biden’s policies on crime and the U.S. border with Mexico.

“We can hold this administration accountable and make the next century the American century,” added the congressman, the current House minority leader.

Democrats are scrambling to hold on to their 12-seat House majority in this year’s midterms. Last week, Biden’s approval rating dropped to 41%, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.

The survey came as record-high inflation and a nationwide spike in crime have been dominating headlines.

“We will provide to the American public a commitment to America, one that could stop this runaway spending that causes inflation ... We will make our streets, our schools safe again,” McCarthy said.

Outgoing Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich.) predicted Sunday it would be difficult for Republicans to govern if they flip the House, but fail to get at least 230 seats in the 435-seat chamber.

“It will be very hard to govern for Republicans if we’re under 230 knowing that we’ve got the MTG element that’s really not a part of a governing majority,” Upton told NBC’s “Meet the Press, using the initials for far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.).

Former President Donald Trump also presents a potential major factor in Republican contests.

He recently endorsed “Hillbilly Elegy” author JD Vance in Ohio and Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania.
