Remember the Hub Department Store? Find out who is the new tenant taking over the space

Project: Russell Station Tech and Learning Center

Location: 1701 W. Market St.

Description: Amped is opening the Russell Station Tech and Learning Center to prepare adults for jobs in the technology sector, Dave W. Christopher Sr., the president and founder of Amped, said.

Christopher said the program is designated to help adults with low or no income. He said the people in the program will receive a stipend, which means they will get paid to learn.

Up to 25 students will participate in a 12-week training for 40 hours a week, Christopher said. People will take a test to evaluate their current skills and if they meet the criteria, they will be selected for the program.

The Russell Station Tech and Learning Center will have other services in the building including free childcare for participants.

The current cohort will start the program at a University of Louisville location while the Russell Station Tech and Learning Center is being constructed. Amped will break ground on the building in May and is expected to open in 2026.

What's being replaced: Hub Department Store, which Christopher said was a Black-owned department store.

Cost: Christopher said that between operations and building the space, the cost is $13.1 million.

Size: It will be a three-story building between 12,000-13,000 square feet, Christopher said.

Developer: Amped, a Black-funded and led nonprofit in Louisville.
