'A remarkable improvement': New Provincetown police station to open. Here's what to know.

It's almost moving day for the Provincetown Police Department. A new police station at 2 Jerome Smith Road is set to become operational on April 4.

It's a big step up from the department's current headquarters, a former funeral home that has "long been deemed inadequate as a public facility," according to information provided by Provincetown Assistant Town Manager Dan Riviello.

"The new station is a remarkable improvement from the old one," said Provincetown Select Board member Leslie Sandberg.

Shortcomings of the current station, which has been in use since 1986, include occasional flooding, building code violations and problems with accommodating modern communication equipment, according to the town.

A total of $17 million was approved by town meeting voters for the new, 13,900 square-foot facility next to Route 6.

"It is a huge accomplishment," wrote Provincetown Police Chief Jim Golden in an email to the Cape Cod Times. "Provincetown now has a police facility whose quality matches the professionals for whom it was built."

According to the town, the new police station features "state-of-the-art heating, cooling, and lighting systems." The building is also solar-ready, and town staff "will work with the Cape and Vineyard Electrical (Cooperative) to install a solar array at no cost."

The public is invited to a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new facility, slated for noon on March 20. Town officials will give brief remarks, followed by guided tours of the station.
