Diamond Hill-Jarvis boys take early lead, outlast Bridgeport

Fort Worth Diamond Hill-Jarvis scored two first-half goals then had to hold off a Bridgeport rally to down the Bulls 3-1 in a boys Class 4A soccer regional quarterfinal on Tuesday at Kangaroo Stadium in Weatherford.

Diamond Hill-Jarvis (20-5-0) will move on to the 4A Region I tournament to face El Paso Riverside (20-5-2) at 3 p.m. on Friday at Northwest ISD Stadium in Justin. Riverside defeated El Paso Bowie 1-0 on Tuesday.

This is the first time the Eagles have reached the regional tournament in back-to-back seasons. DH-J lost in the regional final last season, but only made it to the regional quarterfinals in 2022.

“We’ve been here before, but we graduated 14 last year, including 10 starters, so it’s a whole new team,” said Diamond Hill-Jarvis coach Kyle Reopelle. “We thought we were rebuilding, but we were just reloading this year.”

The Eagles lost in the 4A state title game in 2021.

Diamond Hill controlled the ball most of the first half and got on the board in the 18th minute when Edgar Resendiz gathered a loose ball and blasted it past the keeper from 20 yards out. Resendiz had taken a couple of shots four minutes earlier, but both missed its mark.

Reyes Medina was stellar in goal for the Eagles all night. Medina stopped a flurry of shots from Bridgeport (19-4-1) during a seven minuted stretch of the first half.

The biggest save came on a shot from Bridgeport’s Jared Contreras who spun a launched a shot to the top shelf that Medina just tipped enough to hit the cross bar and bounce high off to the left.

DH-J made it 2-0 in the 34th minute when Josue Paredes picked up a loose ball and drove it to the left post from 24 yards out.

“I’m really proud of our guys. We came out and played our game, especially in the first half,” said Reopelle. “I thought we did a really good job of controlling the tempo and creating some opportunities and continuing to push and press. They have some some very talented, skilled and hard-working guys and I felt like our guys did a very good job of shutting them down playing solid defense and staying composed.”

After the half Bridgeport applied tremendous pressure to try to make up the two-goal deficit, but Paredes, playing on the back line, and Median were stellar in keeping the ball out of the Eagle’s net.

“He’s one of the hardest working kids on our team leading by example,” said Reopelle of Paredes, a senior. “He understood what needed to be done today. He needed to be aggressive, defensively when the ball’s in the air.

“Then the ball pops to him at their end at the right time, he keeps a cool head and puts his foot through it and puts it on target.”

The Bulls finally got on the board in the 66th minute when another loose ball was punched in by Contreras to cut the lead to 2-1. But Bridgeport was never able to get another shot off the rest of the way.

Alejandro Ibarra, who Reopelle calls “electric”, capped the game with a 40-yard rocket to the top right corner of the goal to put the game out of reach in the 74th minute.

“It was really physical today, but scoring that goal brought everybody up,”said Ibarra, who was fouled eight times, often hard, in the game. “Our team just has a love for the game and I feel like that really helps us because not every team has that.

“I’m just really proud of this team. We go at it 100 percent no matter the time or how tired we are.”
