Reggie Wayne, Dwight Freeney, Robert Mathis named Pro Football Hall of Fame semifinalists

Reggie Wayne, Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis are one step closer to reaching Canton.

On Tuesday, it was announced the three former Colts were among 25 modern-era semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2024. However, the news was not new for the three, as each was named a semifinalist before.

Last year, Wayne and Freeney were named finalists. For Wayne, this is his fifth time as a semifinalist.

He's 10th all-time in receiving yards (14,345) and receptions (1,070). Wayne, who is currently the Colts' wide receivers coach, made six Pro Bowls and one All-Pro team and led the NFL in receiving in 2007 with 1,510 yards.

Freeney earned All-Pro honors three times made seven Pro Bowls. He compiled 107.5 sacks, including a league-leading 16 in 2004, and forced 44 fumbles with the Colts. In total, Freeney has 125.5 sacks in his career, which ranks 26th all-time.

Andre Johnson, a wide receiver who played one season with the Colts in 2015, was also named a semifinalist.

The list of 25 semifinalists was reduced from an initial group of 173 nominees announced in September. Next, the list will be cut down to 15 modern-era player finalists.
