Update, March 24, 2023:

Reese Witherspoon posted a joint statement with Jim Toth, her husband of more than a decade, announcing their divorce. The couple shared the personal news on Instagram, only two days shy of what would have been their 12th wedding anniversary. They were married on March 26, 2011. Reese and Jim have one child together: a son named Tennessee James. Reese also has two kids — Ava and Deacon — from her previous marriage to actor Ryan Phillippe.

"We have some personal news to share … It is with a great deal of care and consideration that we have made the difficult decision to divorce," the Instagram post read. "We have enjoyed so many wonderful years together and are moving forward with deep love, kindness, and mutual respect for everything we have created together."

It continued: "Our biggest priority is our son and our entire family as we navigate this next chapter. These matters are never easy and are extremely personal. We truly appreciate everyone’s respect for our family’s privacy at this time. Reese and Jim."

Best known as America’s sweetheart, Reese Witherspoon is beloved for her iconic roles in Cruel Intentions, Legally Blonde, and Sweet Home Alabama. Following HBO’s Big Little Lies, the Louisiana native continues to take her skills to the next level by producing and starring in exciting projects, the latest one being a TV series adaption of Celeste Ng’s bestseller Little Fires Everywhere.

But fans may have never seen this side of the 43-year-old if it weren’t for her husband, Jim Toth, inspiring her to try her hand at producing. "He said, 'You should produce movies,’” Reese told Harper’s Bazaar in 2016. “You read more books than anybody I know. You should just buy some of them and turn them into films.” And so, she did just that.

Jim has had Reese's back from the very beginning. The two first met in 2010 at a friend’s party when the actress had an encounter with a “really drunk guy” hitting on her and “making such an idiot of himself” — that is, until Jim stepped in.

At the time, he was a leading talent agent at Creative Artists Agency representing stars like Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr., and Matthew McConaughey. Although Jim wasn’t Reese’s agent, they ran in similar circles.

"Jim came over and said, 'Please excuse my friend. He's just broken up with someone,'" she said to Elle. “Jim was a really good friend, pulling him out of that situation. That's just kind of who he is, a really good person."

By the end of 2010, Jim proposed to Reese and the two tied the knot shortly after on March 26, 2011. The couple exchanged their vows in an intimate ceremony in Ojai, California alongside Reese’s children — Ava and Deacon — from her previous marriage to actor Ryan Phillippe.

Soon after, the family grew once again with the birth of Reese and Jim’s first child, Tennessee James Toth, on September 27, 2012. Although the Oscar winner admits that “having a baby at 37 was so much harder,” she wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Speaking with People in 2016, Reese opened up about Jim as a parent to their three children. “He’s an incredible man, a wonderful organizer, a great leader," she told the outlet. "He’s very patient and funny with the kids, and he really encourages them to see the humor in life.”

After nine years of marriage, Reese and Jim are still going strong and supporting each other’s ambitions. Reese has added entrepreneur, producer, and author to her résumé. Meanwhile, the top talent agent has become the Head of Content Acquisitions and Talent at Quibi, a phone app launching in April full of short-form movies and shows.

While both of their careers continue to soar, Reese will always remember what first drew her to Jim: his selflessness.

“Jim said, ‘I’m gonna show you every day what a good partner is, what a good person is. I'm going to take care of you. I'm gonna do this so much that you're gonna get used to it,'” she told Elle. “I was like ‘What are you talking about?’ I’ve never had anybody like that in my life.”
