With the trade deadline roughly 24 hours away, the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs are discussing a trade that could change the landscape of the American League.

According to MLB insider Jon Morosi, the Red Sox and Cubs have discussed a trade centered around first baseman Anthony Rizzo.

Rizzo, a three-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove Award winner, is on the final year of his contract with the Cubs. He could end up being a rental for the Red Sox or any team that acquires him.

In 92 games this season, Rizzo has a .248 average with 14 home runs and 40 RBI. His best years might be behind him, but he’s still an impactful hitter that could really help Boston down the stretch.

Rizzo isn’t in the Cubs’ lineup this afternoon against the Cincinnati Reds, which has led to a ton of speculation about his future. Cubs manager David Ross, however, claims Rizzo is simply resting.

“I had this earmarked for Rizz for a while now,” Ross said, via ESPN “First off-day after the All-Star break. That was normal.”

Rizzo isn’t the only notable player on Chicago’s roster who has been mentioned in trade talks. Kris Bryant has also been linked to a handful of teams over the past few weeks.

We’ll see if the Cubs can strike a deal or two before the deadline passes on Friday afternoon.
