Record warmth, high winds and lake effect snow. It's going to be a wild week in Rochester weather

The next few days in Rochester could include some record-high warmth, iced-over roads, some lake effect snow and wind gusts exceeding 50 mph.

Weather in Rochester NY: Forecast for the week ahead

A variety of weather conditions is expected in the Rochester region this week, starting with a sunny Monday with the high temperature approaching 50 degrees, according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo.

Tuesday and Wednesday will be unseasonably warm, with predicted highs in the mid-60s, said Weather Service Meteorologist Jon Hitchcock. Rain showers and thunderstorms are also expected off and on throughout the day on Tuesday and showers are likely on Wednesday, he said.

But late Wednesday afternoon, "a strong cold front will move through and temperatures will fall extremely fast" - from the 60s to freezing in just a few hours, Hitchcock said.

"The main concern will be potential for the wet rods to flash freeze," he said. That would make for difficult travel conditions Wednesday evening.

The large temperature drop could also yield some accumulating lake effect snow in communities near Lake Ontario and whipping winds with gusts that could exceed 50 mph, he said.

Thursday is predicted to be cold - with a high around 30 - before the temperature warms back up to around 50 degrees on Friday, potentially to the 60s by Sunday, Hitchcock said.

The normal high in Rochester for the final week of February is 38 degrees, according to Weather Service records.
